I put mine in peat pellets in the little plastic greenhouse they come in and put it on top of the hot water heater and all my seeds have germinated. Just a suggestion it works for me.

Both plants should respond quite well to topping them i usually top twice before flowering. As far as the strains that will not respond well all strains should respond well to topping unless there stressed from lights,nutes,bugs etc.
