hey dude I've also been running over the same vertical cfl idea in my head recently, only difference is Ive got 2 x 6500k 250w cfl's without reflectors. I'm not sure if this will waste light unless the lamps r underneath the main canopy, given that the lamps cant actually touch the plants...

I'm going soil 4 my 1st effort too. Less variables/powerpoints/maintenance/dramas etc But drekoush, I will say that a guy from work has a prett crazy aquarium, n that shit makes hydro look way easy!!! If u keep a tight fish tank, u'll find hydro easy. It's the same principles. Good luck man.
