the lights you have now will not flower a plant, or veg it very well for that matter. you need ALOT of light. if you can steal cfls, get them, whatever. im just giving u my honest opinion bro. im down for your 0 dollar grow and all. but your not goin to be able to do it from start to finish (3 months min) with the supplies you have at the moment.

billybob-would i use the cfl's (100w per plant) in addition to the current lights or would i just drop the current lights as soon as i can get the cfl's? also if i get half cool and half warm white, at 100w per plant could i go from vegging all the way to flowering? thanks again bob for all your help.

i would ditch the lights u have once u get the cfls. if you have 100 watts of true cfl watts, not the incandesent equivilant per plant,e you will be able to get a nice harvest. you could get by with 2 43 watt bulbs per plant. u can rig reflectors out of soda cans. im not trying to get you to spend money man, but for the sake of your plants man!

now the 43 watt cfl's are the same spiraly bulbs i am looking for? also will they screw right into any regular lamp? now what is this incandescent equivalent? i'm totally blind to this...thanks

im no cfl master. i only deal with HID's. anyways. incandesent lights are normal bulbs. your everyday lightbulb. compact fluorescents use much less wattage but put out more light tha incandescents.the package will have a small wattage rating and then a big wattage rating. the big number is the equivilant of light it puts out compared to an incandesent bulb. cuase old people dont know how to change with the times and still need to think they need the 75 watt bulb in the light socket. the smaller number is the actual wattage of the cfl. I FUCKING HATE CFLS.

There is no reason to HATE, CFLs can be a perfectly acceptable supply of light to your plants. You just have to remember that you don't have the same penetration as you do with HID lights. This means that you have to place the bulbs in a way that there is direct light on almost every part of the plant. Everyone deserves the right to grow the good plant, not just those who can spend hundreds on equipment.

dude im not knocking. im just saying i can imagine how annoyed i would get trying to adjust all those clfs 1-2 inches away from all parts of the plant all the time. thats a pain. i take it back i love cfls. cfls have born a revolution of closet pot growers in my opinion.

I was looking at your grow and I can see why you prefer the HID. But 2 bucks a bulb is worth the extra work when growing would be otherwise impossible.

i feel you man, im not knocking cfl's at all. 75% of the people on this site use cfls. i did research for 5 years before i had a chance to even plant a seed for real. u can spend cheap on cfl bulbs and still def get a good first grow. you just need to know what kinda lumens per sq foot u need.

sory havnt read the whole thread, I popped in in the begening though :P
but where are you getting CFLs for 2 bucks a pop?
I bought some for a dollar, and the4y sucked so bad that they were like... sucking all over the place man, why not just shell out the 130 in a month or so, and buy a 400W HPS from HTG
if you put like 4 bucks aside a day, in a month thatl be enough for a light, even a crackhead can do that :P

I think that CFLs are a cheap way to test the water and if you are ever really going to 'seriously' grow you need more power. I get a little worried about those 150 dollar lights from HTG though, are those really alright or is it better to spend the extra money and not get the cheapest one?

I ordered my 400watt hps from htg supply the cheapest one you can get for $143 after shipping and after tax and it works great. better than the one they were selling for 250 at my local hydro store.. it was professionally packaged and i live on the west coast. not a single scratch on the bulb, ballast or reflector.. it arrived within 4 business days exactly. and was delivered right to my front door. i also got a sticker and a htg lighter lol... guess the guy knows what most of his customers are up too! listen at the beginning of my grow i thought cfls were the shit... but heres the thing its not really a cheap way to go.. you end up having to buy a shitload of bulbs and you have a messy shitty grow room. by the end of the whole ordeal you spent like 100 bucks and your not going to grow high quality buds.. even if you are just testing out the water.. do yourself a favor and order A 400 watt hps from htg supply. really i will never set foot inside another local hydro store only htgsupply from now on...

let's get 1 thing straight

I WILL BE BUYING A HTG LIGHT SETUP FOR MY NEXT GROW, AND SEROPONIC SETUP. FOR THIS GROW I WILL NOT SPEND A DIME. I DO NOT CARE IF THEY DIE, IF I CANNOT BORROW/TAKE WHAT I NEED I WILL NOT USE IT. I'M SORRY JUST FOR THE INTEGRITY OF THE THREAD. I WANT TO EXPERIMENT WITH HOW FAR I CAN GO WITH FREE STUFF. I KNOW YOU GUYS WILL HATE ME BUT IT'S SOMETHING I WANNA TRY...

speaking of my next grow, even though i plan on spending alot of time/money on it, i got the resevoir for my aero setup FOR FREE! a brand new 35 gal. rubbermaid duratote w/ locking lid.

as for stealing from gramps, i didn't steal anything he gave me most of the stuff when i asked no questions asked since it was just sitting in his garage. but anything he didn't GIVE to me, i just to grandma i was BORROWING it, and they'll never be the wiser. like i said all this stuff was just collecting dust in the garage/shed.

and iblazethatkush you are one lucky bastard! he was an asswhole so you don;t even feel bad. hey btw got lights you don't need? lol remember it free if someone gives it to me. ;) thanks everyone for dropping in and keep the info/comments coming!
