1 1000w or 2 600w?

Ok, so I have a question for experienced growers, currently I'm doing my first grow, vegging in 1x1x1,6 homemade mylar tent with 250 MH and 200 cfl's. For flowering I'm not sure if I should go with a:

1m X 2m X 2m (2 m2 or aprox. 21 square feet) tent and 2X600w hps or:
1,2m X 1,2m X 2m (1,44 m2 or aprox. 15 square feet) and a 1000w hps....

I know I will get better yield with the 2X600w, but that is going to cost me way more...2x ballasts, 2x lamps, 2x reflectors and a bigger fan and carbon filter. And the tent will also be more expensive cos I'll need a proper light proof tent, no homemade. What is your opinion? would it yield that much more that it is well worth it???

2 600s you can spread the light further... i would never personally use 1000 watt lamps, 600s are the future :)

you can easily make your own tent ??? some 2 by 2 a drill few screws.... you can even get zips for it.... me and my pals all use home made tents. its like being a kid again and making a den... its fun... iff you aint got the time fair play buy one but id make ur own. be creative

two 600 will allow you to hit every corner of your grow room with light, rather than just having one light hitting the same spot day in and day out.

Haha, I can relate to that, making my tent was quite fun, and cost me only like $50, and I'm quite proud of it, my only concern is to make it light proof during dark hours in 12/12, I don't know where I can get the right zips here in Iceland, but I'll try. Maybe I can start with one 600w and a smaller tent, and then make a bigger tent and add another 600w when I get more money ;)

2-600w HIDs bro. All the way. More lumens, more lumens per watt, & more concentrated light spread over a wider area. I made the same investment and don't regret a thing..

I have 1 1000 watter, but ended up getting a light mover. In hindsight, I wish I had just gotten 2 600 watters....So yeah, do that.

600's but....... 3 400w you can spread the light even more AND.......it's only 1200 watts (the same as 2 600's) plus you can get the lights closer and the bulbs for the 400's are cheap.
I have 4 400's and I love them. i can get the light real close to the plants and they generate less heat than the others,.

Heres a link to greners , its there deal. Pretty cheap setup with digital ballast

Thanks guys, I'm going with 2 600w if not 3 400W! I don't have to buy it all at once. Prices here in Iceland are a bitch and it isn't really cheaper to order online, shipping is always expensive and then customs are around 25% on top of that :S

go for the 600s mate.. less wires and ballasts to worry about, plus 3 bulbs increases the risk of one going ping when you need it most... the zippers arre self adhesive and can be baught from hollands hydroponics. dunno if theyl send to iceland tho but good luck with ya grow

it depends on your grow and set up, if you are doing a scrog with a very even canopy than the 600's will own the 1000 but if you are growing taller trees that are cramed in that tent and penetration is an issue than the 1000 will serve you better. it just depends on how you carry your grow

600s all the way, i had 2 1000s and ill take my 600s any day of the week. i can keep the hoods 2-3 inches from the tops and still only see 75 degrees ( i put a thermometer probe there to check highs/lows. if you do get a 1000 do not get a magnetic ballast. get the digital, it may cost more, but in the long run your elec bill will thank you. especially if you go with 2 600 digitals and run em on 220 (thats what i do and they pull 1.8 amps when running).hop it helps.

Do they sell HPS yard lights in the hardware stores ? That would be cheap substitute. No shipping or customs.

What is the final weight differences between using a 600 and a 1000 is my question to those who have used both?
Does the 1000 efficiently earn its keep with a heavier product?

I have one 1000w now, and looking to add a second light soon; debating on the 600 or another 1000 for the same reasons all have stated above.

I can only get 3 well sized plants under a 1000 now, and the way I grow em, they are four ft by four ft each.
I'm really concerned about the effectiveness of light with only using a 600 for my serioous kankle plants. The wood is so thick, the bases grow kankles.. lol... Fuck I could almost harvest that shit as lumber!
Can a 600w do that in soil?

If I add another 1k now, by the time I need to add more light I might just get a light mover for em before adding more lights and additional heat to the room. Im building a second room now, which will be 8 x 25

final weight is subject to so many things. just do the math.heres the lumens for a 1000, 1 foot from bulb is 140,000 2 feet away is 35,000 3 feet away is 15,555 and 4 feet is 9999. the 600 is, 1 foot away 90,000 lumens 2 feet away 22,500 3 feet away 9,999 and 4 feet away is 6428. now keep in mind that most people who run 1000s keep the lights 2 to 3 feet above the colas. i can place my 600s as close as 6 inches and still see temps below 85. i prefer to keep the lights about 10 to 12 inches from the colas. so for example, a friend of mine runs 2 1000s and keeps his lights about 3 feet from the tops, so his plants recieve approx 15,555 lumens. i keep mine 10 to 12 inches from the tops so my plants receive far more lumens ,approx 90,000.

Thanks Dart, thats a big help for lumen stats.

If I went with a 600w, it seems like I would probably be down to one plant per light given its light footprint in comparison to the size of the plants I'm currently growing. They are four feet wide each. My last one(chronic) harvested almost 9 zips, and while sharing with two other plants. I rotate them regular to keep all areas getting some rays.
Right now my 1k light is about 1.5 to 2ft from top colas.

My debateable current logic is, if I put 2 x 1000w's on a mover system, I could/should be able to get them babies pretty close(a lot closer) to the colas, and blast the shit out of em multiple times a day, with mini-breaks for em to catch a rest and thrive moreso with. Couldnt I get the lights to within inches with a mover even with the 2 x 1000w's?

i thought about a mover, but i didnt want to have to upgrade my ac since the closed hoods allow for me to run a small ac and keep the temps in check in summer. my room is 6x8x8 and i ran the 2 600s in the xtra sun 6 inch hoods. i upgraded to the raptors and they barely fit in the room. :blsmoke::blsmoke::blsmoke:

Nice pics Dart!

I have a radiant 6 so far, but dont the oversized reflectors also decrease your lumen counts through its additional disbursements of the light? Thereby, and ultimately decreasing your lumens per sq inch/foot by running with the larger hoods.
My hydro shop told me(talked me out of actually) not to get oversized hoods as it displaces too many lumens, and told me I would be better served by keeping the lumens focused with a smaller reflector like the radiant 6, and keeping me closer to the 140k count.
