100 CFM carbon filter - inline fan in small tent

Hi, this is my first grow, in a 2X2X5 small tent, I was wandering if a 100 CFM fan + 100 CFM carbon filter will completely eliminate odors? and if such a small carbon filter will get plugged really soon? how soon? Also, I saw there are centrifugal fans and linear fans (which are much more quiet), is there a reason why not to use the linear fan? Thanks in advance :)

Hey juicy

Your tent is 20 cubic feet so a 100cfm fan would evacuate your room 5x a minute without any restrictions( carbon filters, ducting, bends).

To eliminate as much odor as possible you will need to keep ur tent under negative pressure 24/7 and make sure the carbon filter and fan are matched properly. If the cfm is too great the air passes through the carbon to fast, to little cfm you wont get the cooling you desire which brings us to fans. Ps make sure its activated carbon and not the crappy coco carbon

Every fan has its positives and negatives. Axial fans are the quietest but as soon as you hook up duct or carbon filter it wont do much. Axials are great for circulation though and micro grows. Inline fans are louder (mainly air turbulence fans themselves are pretty quiet) but can handle the static pressure of a carbon filter much better. When you buy a fan most companies show charts for how much cfm youll be pulling under static load. Keep in mind thats hooking the carbon filter straight to the fan without any duct in between. Every bend or added ft of duct you lose cfm.

So depending on the type of lighting you will be using will influence the amount of exhaust needed.

Either way i think you would be better off with an inline outside the tent in a sound box and maybe a silencer.

What kind of lighting are you planning on using?
What is your ambient temps were the tent sits?

He, thank you very much!

I'm using LED 180W UFO (full sectrum) + few white CFL's (total CFL - 200W) , I plan to switch to 12/12 soon, then I'll put warm CFL's (total CFL ~ 170W).. the ambient temp is ~25 - 18 C, inside tent its about 32-22 C.. too hot I know...
Ca you approximate the noise level in dB of an inline 100 CFM (connected to a carbon filter) vs. 160 CFM fan vs. an axial 100 CFM fan? Currently I got a 100 CFM vent which is rather quiet..

hi juicy

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. As I said before it's not necessarily the inline fans that are loud it's the turbulence from the strong air movement. If you're needing a carbon filter your best bet will be an inline because of pressure the carbon filter puts on the fan. Now when it comes to noise you can use duct silencers, insulated ducting, and alot of sound proofing. Put your fan in a 15 gal tote and insulate it with egg-crate foam, old shirts anything just pack it in after you route the duct through of course. Without a silencer you can get a good inline fan to be the noise level of a regular room fan on low or quieter. Also many companies make quiet fans and rate there db,s accordingly. My 4 inch 165cfm fan is around 55db and with some creativity you can get that cut in half or more. I just put a regular ocillating next to my cab on low and it drowns out the 4 inch.

hope that helps.
