100% germination with old seed

Hi.

I have been saving seeds for a loooooonnnnng ass time….never really had any definite plans for them….but I thought, "If weed is ever legalized, then I'll start growing my own." Well…..at this point in time, I'm growing them.

I'm not sure if this hasn't been covered already in another thread, but I wanted to pass on a method of germination that really worked for me.

I filled three small cups of filtered water to stand for a day and then I added the tiniest drop of SuperThrive to the water and threw 3 Colombian Sativa seeds into one cup and 1 Vortex seed into its own separate cup and waited about 36 hours. All beans cracked! The Vortex was particularly vigorous (probably the youngest seed of the bunch).

Once I saw the root tip starting to grow out of the seed husk, I transferred them to a small plate where I had a soaked brown paper bag (like to take your lunch to work in) and folded it over the seeds. I then covered that with some Saran wrap and set it on top of my tv cable box (it gets a little bit warm when 'on')

The very next day, the Vortex seed had grown about an inch-long root! The Colombians were noticeably slower in their growth rate, but they looked good.

The Vortex seed went into a plastic Dixie cup with a bunch of drainage holes in the bottom that was loosely filled with TGA Subcool "Base Mix" soil. I mixed a very dilute solution of Humbolt Honey (basically, molasses and some micronutrients) and watered the seeds into the soil with it.

The Vortex has been up for 2 days now.

The Colombians are jussssst starting to break into the light.

So I have 4 plants in total -all from old bag seed.

I don't really have high expectations for them….mostly just a "first-timers" experiment with getting my growing tent dialed in. However, something really nice might turn out from them…ya never know!

But, just to make sure I have some success at the end, I am also going to be getting a couple clones from a medical grower friend of mine. Hopefully, by then, these seed-plants will be about the same size as the clones so that they all finish at the she time. And, hopefully, there won't be any males. If there are, I will pull them -only because I am learning to grow, Later on, once I have a few grows under my belt, I plan on growing some seed-weed -just to see if I can replicate some of that old school smoke that made me laugh so much back in the old days! :)

But it's sure exciting to finally see something green growing from my efforts (and expenses!) to get set up!

I really hope the seeds don't turn out a bunch of hermies. I was told that the Colombians were from a guy who ALWAYS grows from his own, stabilized seed….so we'll see. The Vortex was a single seed from a KILLER cut of the strain. I remember that it had a terpene profile that smelled like rotten fruit….and a little like puke! (good puke?) I so hope this one turns out!

:)

I will update later on when there's actually something significant to look at!

peace

Good Luck on your first grow, sounds like you have done your homework.

I started with Bag seeds in July 2013', I'm still growing them out!
i found a good strain among my plants after killing 16 males out of my 20 plants.
3 very Nice Sativa dominate females from the same bag and 1 female Indica dom.
I'm flowering the 2nd one now, I have taken 10 clones of the last one so I can run this strain All Year!
i also have a cutting from the Indica in my veg. ( the 1st plant I flowered )

Talk about old ass seeds. I'm in the process of just sprouting and already started to a grow a few seedlings, of some really old 25+ years seeds of NL#5 x Skunk #1 - Bid Bud - and G-13.... Only got bout 5 to sprout so far and 1 already two week old seedling ready to veg.

Bagseed you say ...but are able to remember the strains ...? forget the super thrive it ain't working, why you don't know that is anybodies guess, but leaving the water in cups overnight is acceptable but noobish! ({Cl} free and at room temp)

Right now you gotta decide if you are growing the Vortex with the Colombians, or is it the Colombians with the Vortex

I have some that are nearly 40 years old! I am saving those for when I really get dialed in! They may not even crack….but if they do, it's likely they will have been from a $15 "lid" of Mexican, landrace Sativa….(hoping). The ones in question are only a couple years old -mmmmaybe 3 years. I just felt like I wanted to try for something that might be from more stabilized genetics for my first grow. "Good seed" is so expensive….I just couldn't bring myself to buy a 5 pack of something that was $100 or more…..because what if I fucked something up….ya know what I mean? So, this first time will be part experiment and part "known" (clones).

Thanks for the replies! I'm super stoked to see the seedlings popping up from the dirt! Is that weird? :)

vostok,

Well, by "bag seed" , I mean it was a seed that came (unintended) from a bag of Vortex that I got years ago. It was a nice, fat dark seed and, like I say…I always save seeds -especially if they look like good, ripe ones!

I'm not sure I understand about SuperThrive. Some people swear by it. So far, it hasn't hurt anything at least. Since the seed was old, I thought it might revitalize it. Like I say….100% success in germinating them…so…..maybe it IS working? Hard to say at this point, I guess….but it hasn't hurt anything (hopefully)!

The Colombian Sativa was kind of the same deal as the Vortex…They came in a bag that I got. They looked ripe. I saved them…and now they are cracked and growing right next to the slightly faster-growing Vortex seedling.

They might all turn out to be males for all I know. Time will tell.

I don't understand your last statement at all. Can you expand on your meaning, please?

Well…just to update….

I had three Colombian Sativa seeds germinate, but only two of them came up when I transferred them to the soil. I dug down a bit and found the dead one. It looked like the tip of the root got bruised….oh well. :(

The Vortex was the first to come up, but, now the two remaining Colombian Sativa seedlings have grown taller than it. I think the Vortex is going to probably be one of the more modern-designed hybrids that will grow short and stout….maybe….But I'm hoping the Sativas will go crazy and do weird things! They are supposedly from a stabilized seed line….I was told the grower has been maintaining this line for decades and regrowing from seed each time….so we'll see what they do.

I think I am going to get some great clones from my friend soon, too!

And, just today, I decided to germinate a couple more old seeds……BIG, dark ones that I collected from a bag of "Dawg Walker Kush" about 3 years ago. I remember the weed was super stinky. I hope I get some weird, crazy phenos of something and not a bunch of males or hermies!

Hi again.

I just transferred the Dixie cup seedlings into a 1 gallon pot!

I noticed that the growth had kind of "stalled" in the Dixie cups after about 16 days from seed. I gently dislodged the seedling from the cup and saw that it was full of healthy roots! YESSSS!

So I watered them in with a dilute B1 solution and now they are back in the tent.

I've already learned: After about 2 weeks in a Dixie cup, the plants start to "demand" more space!

Barring any problems, the next stop will be 5 gallon buckets.

Oh yeah….I also decided to germinate some 7 year-old "G-13" seeds (supposedly). The seeds were noticeably larger than average, so I was curious to see if anything would come out of them. Well, guess what? They are just starting to push up through the dirt today! So, that's pretty good for 7 year old seeds, huh? And, yeah, I soaked them in a cup of water with a tiny trace of SuperThrive and then transferred them to damp paper towel until the roots were about 1/2" long…and then to the Dixie cups with the TGA base soil.

This is pretty cool stuff! I like growing! It's satisfying!

You should have put the males aside and grown out the nicer ones, collect the pollen and freeze it for later breeding projects. I usually do clone only but out of the seeds I've started I have never had a male and none of those beans were feminized
