1000 hps vs. 2x 400 hps?

I Want to buy either 1x1000 Watt hps/mh or 2x400 watt hps/mh setup!
but which would harvest the most? which could fit more plants? thanks in advance :joint:

Well, two 400s would cover more area, allowing for more plants... but, someone with more experience would have to answer the yield question.

the 1000w light has more penetration power than two-400w lights and it also outputs more lumes than two-400w lights, the thousand watter would be better all around unless your grow area is skinny and long, then two-400's wouldnt be a bad idea

I think the 2 400 watters would be better seeing you could get them closer to the plants without burning them while covering more area. The Lumes on the 1000 watter would probably be less because of the height it would need to be at. So in the end youd get more lumes per watt from the 400's

400w HPS puts out about 50 000 Lumens. A 1000w HPS puts out 126 000 Lumens.

Simple math. Unless your worried about heat go with the 1000w or if you want 2 lights, use 2 600w HPS. A 600w HPS puts out 98 000 lumens, almost double and only 200w more than a 400.

you could go 3 4oowatt hps with a 150 watt mh in the middle i would sugest that
I run 2 400w's right now and I'm going to move up to 600's. Light isn't as additive as people think. I think that with 2 600w I'll get the penetration I'm looking for and the coverage that I want. I grew 10 plants under 2 400w's and it got a little cramped lumens-wise.

I'm not trying to jack the thread, but I wanted to ask this question without starting a new one
and this seemed like the right place to discuss it.

So, which would be better inside a 4x4 tent: A single 1000w or a single 600w
(also inside an air-cooled hood)

The 1000w would give you more heat to contend with, but more lumens. But would the
600 work just as well considering you can get it closer to the tops?

Or maybe there's very little difference?

Thanks ahead.

If you can manage the heat go with the 1000w for sure.

I dont see any reason to run a 600w unless your worried about heat. With an air cooled hood you can put your 1000w just as close as your 600w light easily. Just have an oscillating fan blowing over the tops of your plants.

Plus with a 1000w ballast you can upgrade your bulb and have even more precious lumens.

True. I've read that optimal is between 3000 and 7000 lumens per sq. ft. A 600w would put me just above
5000, and a 1000w would put me around 9000.

The heat is the main factor. I'm keeping it at around 78 with a 400w at the moment, and I just don't want
to go over that 80-85 degree threshold with a 1000w.

My main fear is that a 1000w in a tent will be hard to cool. 1000w does have more choice in bulbs tho.

Thanks again

it breaks down like this, a 1000 hps is 140,000 lumens, a 400 is around 50,000 so it would take 3-400's to equal the 1000, now the 600's put down 90,000 and some bulbs are 95,000 so clearly watt for watt they are the lamp of choice, so with 2-600's your putting down 180,000-190,000 lumens, thats almost as much as a 1000 plus a 400 together all for only 1200 watts, look at lumatek ballasts, they make some nice dual 600 ballasts so you would only need one to run both lights and they are slightly cheaper than buying 2 seperate ballasts, so what are the dimensions of your room??? that will play a huge factor in on what lights to get and what reflectors to buy, my area is 5x5 and i use 2 600's with lumenarc L3 hoods which put down a rectangular footprint so i have each light covers2.5 x 5 feet, if i hang the light at 2 1/2 to 3 feet i get almost even light over the whole conopy

2 x 600w in a 4x4 tent is extreme overkill. 1 x 600w would be plenty, and yes, 600w are the MOST efficient HPS for watt/lumens. But I dont think multiple lights would be a very good choice in a 4x4 tent, thats why I would recommend the 1000w if you can handle the heat.

Have you considered an AC? If you run an AC or portable AC outside the tent then you can draw in cooler air into your tent and handle the higher temps.

You could probably get an AC and magnetic 1000w ballast for the same price as a dual 600w digi...or any digi ballast.

Digi's are alright, but a totaly waste of money IMO. Magnatic ballasts work perfectly and last for Years and Years if maintained properly.

I disagree about the magnetic ballast/AC combo.

I bought a 600w Lumatek Ballast, 600w Hortilux Bulb, and a Hydrofarm Radiant 6 aircooled hood for like 350$
