1000 watt Bulb with 600 watt Digital Ballast? Could it Work?

Anyone try it?

Thats not a good Idea there is a reason why they match ballast watt with bulb watt. If you have a 400w you can put a 430w in an hps ballast. Or Digital ballast where they have a 1000w max and dimmable to 600w and 400w with the 1000w bulb. But to put a 1000w into a 600w ballast, pry wont work or could blow up in your face or burn your house down if you left it running.

I do believe that some folks are talkin out their asses on this one...Variable output ballasts ie; 75%, 50% etc. A 1000 watt ballast driven at 50% = 500 watts...etc
If anything the bulb would fail to strike. I have done it when the situation called for it. But if you do not have a sound understanding working with electricity then do not risk it....period.
I took the ignitor out of a 600 hps magnetic to run a 1000 mh bulb in a pinch one time.

i know this is super old but i just wanted to clear some things up. theres tons of fail in this thread. you people diffidently dont understand electrical very well...

anyway i run a 1000 watt bulb in a 600 watt ballast on my scrog for afew positive reasons!! just to clarify and make this make a little more sense to you guys that dont get it yet, just like how dimable ballasts allow you to run 50% (500W) 75%(750w) through a 1000w bulb you can also run the bulb just fine on a 600w ballast at 60% its maximum rating. the up sides to this are the 1000w bulbs are much much bigger so the light is more evenly dispersed in my hood and through the canopy, not only that but simple science and my own observations also say that the 1000w bulb on a 600w ballast runs cooler than a 600 watt bulb with a 600w ballast because the larger the object the better the heat is dispersed my setups runs 4 degrees cooler.... think about it from another simpler electrical stand point think about car amplifier and subs you have no problem running a 600watt amplifier on a 1200watt subwoofer because its under powering it! i also have theorys that the 1000w bulb with 600 watt ballast combo makes the bulbs last longer because there being used at practicly half energy so i dont think the filament will break down as fast.

oh and the only reason that it wouldn't work for any reason what so ever would be because the bulb striker (a part of the ballast) might not be powerfull enough BUT i know for a fact and have seen multiple times at commercial lighting stores that the 600w/1000W use the same striker or at least can .

just felt like i would clear alot of the bullshit up

I promise you it will work I'm running the setup right now and I can see right in front of me that my tent is 2-4 degrees cooler and the fact that the bulb itself is so much larger and actually fits center in the hood unlike 400's and 600's which always sit on the side of the hood closest to the bulb socket just because there not long enough. The 1000w bulb should make for less of a hot spot. And although I can't prove it I think it's fair to say sense a little more than half the power is being out out the bulb and it's not being stressed or heated to its normal heat it should be all mean retain par lighting longer and just last longer in general

I have an Apollo 600 watt dimmable ballast and I have A 1000 watt Luminex high pressure sodium bulb if I decide to use my Luminex thousand watt bulb with my 600 watt ballast should I still leave the dimmable setting on 100%?

Yes it does work. No I do not recommend it due to change in spectrum. I have done it on a budget in the past but if you can afford to get the right bulb I highly recommend it

Maybe it works, and maybe it runs cooler, but you would have to be able to test the spectrum. I feel that you are not getting the correct spectrum.

Your wrong a 1000watt bulb run via a600watt ballast will work but will work as a 600watt bulb

did anyone actually say the 600 watt would 'work' as a 1000 watt....the question was would it work at all

Yes it will work you just have to ream the socket out with a fork while ballast is running ,if that doesn't get you where you want to be try shoving an erect Johnson in with the same stipulations
