Look into Gavita or Phantom. Gavitas have come down in price quite a bit lately. Main thing to watch for is the bulb as not all DE bulbs are created equal. The original Philips 1000D DE Green still being the best and actually are cheaper wholesale then the other brands.
With the 1000W DE make sure you have 5-7 feet of head from top of the plants.

Avoid nanolux, had a LOT of failures with those.
Phillips makes what I consider the best DE HPS lamp.
Ballasts I like the Phantom, Sunsystem and Gavita ballasts. The cheaper ones may have issues with RF interference and should be avoided if you have cable.
I don't have 5 - 7 feet and I get great results with my DE 1000's but you need good airflow between the canopy and lights to keep the plants from burning up.
Running the lights 5 - 7 feet away is for commercial grows that use a "grid" lighting setup where all the lights hit all the plants from all angles. This is not practical in most grows but DE's can be treated much like normal 1kW SE's so long as you understand the footprint shape, maintain proper canopy temps and keep your PAR numbers in spec (usually around 22 inches or farther is good to go). There is no magical reason that DE's need to be run so far away. It's just the fact one can't air cool them and they do put out a little more umols, nothing that can't be dealt with having 8 - 9 foot ceilings and manage plant size. I grow mine pretty big under the DE's and get excellent quality and yields.

Your helpful post and experience is timely, thank you.
I recently helped an exuberant, but inexperienced somebody out with watering and plant maintenance and thought they were running their DE phantom lights a little too high, but I didn't have the practical experience with their setup to make a vociferous claim they needed to lower them.
Their plants were telling me they wanted more light though and that's what matters. Internodal stretching, light bud development etc.
If lights are at 7 feet now, would you gradually lower them or just do a one shot lower to the 2 foot range ?

I would just bring them down incrementally so as not to stress the plants. When I move my plants from veg into my flowering rooms I turn down the lights and ease them up over the first week or so while they are still vegging but in the flowering rooms. I also gradually increase CO2 PPM & temperature. Failing to do this stresses the plants as they didn't have such intensity in veg, gotta allow them time to get their feet under them.
