1000w HPS and an outlet

Hello, first post.
My question is regarding using a 1000 watt High Pressure Sodium light with a 220v ballast into a regular wall outlet. I am not too familiar with electricity but can a regular wall outlet handle this kind of light 24 hours a day? I also have a fan(http://www.progressive-growth.com/prodimages/fans/vortex_6inch.jpg) that will operating in the same room in a different socket. Its a fairly old house so I just want to be sure and will take whatever precautions necessary. Thanks for any help.

depends on what voltage your household gets.

if its 220 then you are going to need a circuit that can handle 5 amps. you'll probably be ok.

if your household runs on 110 volts then you need a different ballast.

i thought you could rewire the inside of ballest and make it a 240...some guy that wired my ballest told me that...

A 240volt ballast requires a 240volt outlet....

Some ballast can be rewired. These are called multi-tap ballast. However if you are needing to be told this information then I would HIGHLY recommend not trying to rewire a ballast or wall outlet as you will most likely die....

yeah man a 240 needs 240. a 240 will not even fit into a 110. a common rule fo thumb would be if a plug wont fit right into the wall than it will not wokr without special precautions. you will need to plug it into a plug suck as your washer or dryer man. be careful fires are started without knowledge. i would reccomend getting a ballast that runs 110 so you dont run into any problems. its like sockets overseas where im at now. you need surge protectors to go down but to go up you will not provide adequate power to the light and you will not get it to light.and never put a 110 in a 240 or oyu will blow somethin and possibly start a fire

yeah thats the truth!!! If I were you I would just get a new one!!!

If you have a properly wired house, the circuit breaker will trip if you overload the line, but if your light is 220 volts, then it will probably not work in a standard Canadian wall outlet. You'd have to either install a special 220 volt line or get a new ballast. Check the ballast you have though. If there is some sort of directions on it for switching it between 120 and 240, that could be an option.

Keep in mind, 220, 230, and 240 are all the same thing, as are 110, 115, and 120. AC voltage is allowed a pretty wide range and appliances are designed to be able to function within that range.
