i started my seedlins from seed under my 1000w MH at around 3 feet or so for a week. Now at around 9 days old i have the light at 27-29 inches away, is this height okay for my young ones? they seem fine to me and temps aren`t that crazy and stay anywhere around 74-82, with RH 50%-63%. anyone ever start they seedlings with a 1000watter? should my plants be okay at 27-29 inches @9 days old? they seem fine to me, i just have to water like every other day because of light being so close to the soil. But in the next few days i plan on raiseing the litght a little so the plants can grown twords the light a little for now. any input would be awesome. also my 1000w is THE ONLY lighting option i have and anything else is def out of the questi0on.

seedlings can handle a lot of light, they should be fine.

i have not used a 1k but i have started seedlings under a 600 and they loved it.

if they stretch lower it but they should be fine, seedlings are hardy little things.

are you trying to make money ? or waste it ? you will not make any money at all starting seeds under 1000 watts. so you will have to basically run that light for 3 months. then flower for 2 to get a good yield. can you explain too us why you want to use a 1k lamp for seeds ? instead of using cfl . pro growers will use a 25 watt cfl to start seeds . save electric. only turn that 1k watt energy killer 100 a month on after they are 2 or 3 feet tall. its up to you what you use. im just wondering why you decided to

a 1000 dimmed down to 400 would be ideal. Then increase it little bits at a time.If I use a 1000 I keep it far far away until I see that they are outta all shock and taking nutes.I try to save as much $ as I can.I usually start veg under a 400 myself.I'm to bull headed to try a CFL

my 1000w is actually dimmable, i been having it all the way on 1000w since they first cracked, would dimming down the intensity now be too stressful or disruptful on them? switching from 1000 to less powerful lgiht, then eventually back to 1000. Should i dim it down to 600 or 400?

if i do decide to dim it, what should i dim it to going from 1000watts @ 27 inches? i really dont want any stretching, and would rather stay at 1000ws though

FOr what tit is worth (maybe something to someone).. I have a few MH's I haven't pulled out of the closet since I realized I can (for my tight small grow space) get far more desirable results for veg with a few low watt 6500k CFL or a 10,000 lumen T-5..

Big intense lights mean big intense plants.. the problem for me is the plants will get bigger than my ability to fruit them to full potential if I let them.. I don't need the double hand sized fan leaves the MH gives me.. I need the half sized fan leaves the CFL gives me and the 1/4 inch spacing between nodes right up through stretch the 6500k's afford me..

I Can't see myself pulling out the MH any time soon.. maybe if I go back to 'commercial industrial'.. but for home, Blue floro's.. (CFL, T-5, even T-8's) are nice and efficient and the indoor vegging results are darn fine..

That is just one lost souls thoughts.. good luck~!

It would be fine but...

My question to u is why would u start @ 1000w first and then ask this question? You already did it right?

Why wouldnt u just start at the lowest dimmable setting and progressively raise it? Seems like a risk to immediatly put them under the most
intense amount of light that u can possibly make and hope it makes it...And then you ask if your babys will make it after you already did it lol....

In my experience a 1k light 3 feet from seedlings would toast them and make me have to water constantly.
I would start on a low setting on the dimmable and raise the wattage according to the plants behavior to it.
Ive raised my plants progressively under a 1000w and the difference between cooking them and having them
in the sweet spot was 4 inchs so i would be very careful with 1000w lamps and young plants...

Ideally i would put them under a 250w t5 and raise them for about 2 or 3 weeks prior to introducing them to the metal halide...
