What is the adverage yeild people are getting off there 400s? What about 600s? Not hijacking the thread but this could help you out a lot in choosing which one to use too. Some people can get 1000grams off a 1000watts can anyone get 250 off a 250 or more?

4 250s with concave reflectors might concentrate light on your plants more effectively. Depends on how many you're growing and I suppose what the reflectors look like.

i go from 2 h/power cfls for veg to flower under a 600 in cooltube when theyre 18-24" tall and i start it around 2' from the tops then bring it down an inch every other day till its about 8-10 above the tops, i find any closer and it doesnt burn but it starts to light bleach the green out of the tops, and i dont get a good enough spread of light to cover the whole room any closer than 8", but this is partly because cooltubes probably have the worst spread of light of all the air cooled reflectors, i plan on buying one of the larger air cooled reflectors soon. but i have started seeds under the 600, 3-4' above them is fine, then bring it down as theyre growing.
That is a good point too. I can get my a/c hood like right on the plants when it is pulling in cold night air. The problem with that is that now the plants on the edges of the room arn't getting the light they need. It is hard to tell by eye. You really need to get one of those light meters from the camera store. I don't have one yet either, they arent too expensive either.

CFLs and floros are a good idea for supplemental lighting too. I want to get some t5 banks and just put them on the side of my 4x4 tent. I think that would be bright but I don't know if it would be overkill till I get a light meter and harvest and weigh a crop
