10x10 tent worth it?

I recently found a private seller on craigslist in my area that is selling 10x10 grow tents for only $475 new. I don't think they are name brand although the pics display they are well constructed with pvc and the seller backs them up if anything breaks. I wanted to ask a few general q's that I am unable to figure out on my own since I am a newbie to this.

1. Are tents in general worth it or can they be easily built with cheap lumber and panda film/mylar? Home depot sells pine for dirt cheap, so I'm kinda tempted to build my own although am unsure if it would be as well sealed for smell and light? And thickness of material avail?

2. Would two 1,000 watt hps/mh be sufficient for sog growing in a 10x10 or would it be more efficent by dividing into 5x10 only with both 1,000 watt lights and just leaving the other parcel empty for the first grow cycle? I understand that it is on the low side although I can imagine that budding smaller plants may not require as much light as growing 6 ft trees.

I wouldn't call "pvc" well constructed. If it isn't metal I wouldn't trust it, I've heard horror stories about the plastic ones breaking! Just my opinion thou! If you can build your own Then yes it will be a lot cheaper but Safety should be your first concern!

Is pandafilm the only material used on these tents? So lining a wooden frame with this will be the same as the average grow tent except for zippers.

Find out exactly what kind of tent it is, then look up that tent, check price, read reviews. Then decide.

I hear you on the PVC although I can add a 2x4 here and there for needed support. I just like the fact that PVC make the tent easily mobile and reasonable to assemble/disassemble.

build your own. I built mine for less. I built mine in a shed. I used half of my shed( I bought a new house and I don't want people in my business while they visit.) I took half of my space available and built a wall to divide my grow from the other half of the shed.it took 5 studs. so that is 10 dollars. MY grow is 5.5x12. since it is in the shed, I needed to buy a door. I bought a used security door and sanitized it. it was 50 dollars. the white plastic I used( I was going to use mylar but it is over priced) was 50. this should be everything you need to start inside.Because of my situation I needed to buy an a/c unit. I bought it used for 65. Tents are for lazy, rich people. I have yet to come across a grow room that is more airtight than what I built. Airtight means no pests and you can use co2.

And yeah, I'd say tents are a waste in general. $110 in insulation, staples, $50 in 2x4's, a drill and a saw and you could build a nice 'tent' that would last forever. Thing is, do you really need a tent? Are you putting it in the center of a large room?

Yes my idea of the whole tent idea is to put it in the center of a room that is quite larger than my proposed grow. The tent is also to block out all light and smell as thieves are a concern. What type of insulation would you recommend and how would you use it? I would def want something that almost no smell can seep through.

Use this if you don't mind building a 2x4 frame: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202092205/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&superSkuId=202938809 It's awesome to work with, 100 times easier than poly. The trick is to frame 16" or 24" on center - use a level and get it perfect, same as you would for drywall. If your framing is done right, that will go up in a couple minutes. You can get the seems to almost disappear with staples, but worst-case you can just duct tape all the seems.

mrmedmj has it right. If you have 500 to drop on a used tent you're better off just drawing up some plans to build your own custom room. This way it's cheaper, brand new, and exactly how you want it to fit your space and placement needs. Good luck with it

The homemade tent sounds like a clever idea as far as cost although I like the fact that the pvc frames are easily to assemble/disassemble which is good cuz I may not stay in a particular residence for long.

then y do ppl make hydro setups inside pvc pipes???
There's been a problem lately with lots of tents.
many industrial plastics and pvc contain chemicals or compounds that are unstable. These gasses build up and can make the plants sick.

Plus, PVC contains chlorine. If it's heated enough and the chlorine vaporizes, it might be enough to kill the plants. Chlorine dioxide LD50 for humans is 2000ppm. I have no idea what it would be for plants. I'm not saying that it will happen, but it's possible. It's more likely to come from the cover than the pipes as they are less dense.
