12/12, 13/11, or 14/10?

yea.

I have heard that if you flower under slightly longer light (and thus less dark) that the extra light will provide more energy and thus a higher yield. What do you know about this? I myself have flowered under 13/11 and it worked out fine, but there was no way to know whether it would have been any different under 12/12. Anyone know the science behind this?

The science is through observation. After the the light cycle drops below 18/6d the female plant will start its flowering cycle. 12/12 seems to be the optimum for most species of mj. I have experimented using other peoples money with other cycles and the results were not entirely desirable. It is "like" grapes in BC. If you suspend the correct mess net over the crop you'll get maga nice grapes. If you remove the nets "thinking" more light should be better you'll surely be disappointed. "Like" putting black plastic over vegatables that will only grow in certain parts of China. Light durations and frequencies dictate most plants flowering(life) cycles.

I've heard 10/14 is the best way to go

A lot of people will find this hard to believe but people and other mammals are sexually regulated by the lunar cycle. This fact also has not been derived through science but from observation. Seeds will also do better if planted just before a full moon.

Flowering hormone is triggered by dark and the length of that darkness, like its tuned into the suns daylength, over the years my 12x12 is now DRIFTED towards 10x14, or 7.30am ---5.30pm, just for my personal convenience, I gotta make a living too ...lol ..and yes on average my plants are shorter by 6-14 inches, but lading with more of the buds, than had I timed her at the popular 12x12, don'r get me wrong its horses for courses, I want to go 12x12 but life has its ups and down, rather than risking a hermie in the system just stick to whats good for you, and one good time slot for all!

I don't see how less light = bigger buds, considering all bud production is completely dependent on the energy it receives from light.

Great topic, start thinking outdoors with me for a moment.

The answer is highly related to strain type, most Afghani genetics(IE:kush)will begin flowering when daylight drops below 14 hours. Outdoors, they finish when daylight reaches at or slightly below 12 hours. This means much of it's natural flowering period is spent well above 12 hours of daylight. For this reason, I now simulate the same indoors by reducing light in increments.

However, sativa dominant strains are a different animal...particularly when it comes to equatorial genetics like Malawi.

I grow mainly sativa dominant strains, and I start at 11/13 and after 5 wks will pull another 1/2 hr of light from the cycle. But almost all of the new near 50% hybrids will jump right into flower at 12/12. I once grew a pure Tia Sativa, for 56 days of 12/12 it showed no sex, but when I went to 11/13 it showed sex almost immediately.

Those ''sats'' can screw any good plans you have had up...they can be very unpredictable at best ...lol growing a plant at a temperate, latitude away from its native latitude just does strange things, its why I recommend guys take seeds from their sativia's, on the first grow with that strain, as second time round is usually best, only my own observation.

From memory you don't actually get a 12x12 on the equator ....ANYWHERE?

12/12 was just a standard used so that all or most types from whatever region would flower on that period it wasnt designed to mimic outdoor environmental conditions

14.5/9.5 most indica types will still flower

16 hours or more most types will stay in veg
i have vegged on 16 hours many times and never seen any flowering
but there are rare exceptions
i have heard of some Asian/Iranian sativas which will flower if they receive under 16 or less hours this is not an autoflower

some of the longer flowering sativas 16+ weeks can veg for many weeks on 12/12 without flowering
reducing the hours on these to 10 on 14 off can make them induce quicker

peace

You can get a 12/12 for a day or so but then the light either increases or decreases because of the planet's relative angle to the sun. Nowhere on Earth does it stay the same amount of light/dark consistently.

But the question is can you increase yield by adding extra light? (Assuming she is definitely going to be in flowering stage)
