petedav,
Forgive me if I ramble but I'm a little baked.
Why do you need to get them in the flowering room so quickly? Couldn't you keep them vegging with the mother plants for a little longer?
If you're worried about their eventual final height you could always try FIMing or LSTing them. There's several good tutorials on the forums about those techniques. I plan on experimenting with them on a couple of plants on my next grow.
Another technique I'll definetly be trying on several plants on my next run will be to follow "Uncle Ben's" method for "pinching for 4 main colas". If you're not aware of his posts on these forums I recommend you search out and read what he has to stay about growing. In fact I'd have to say he's my current growing guru.
I've been stumbling along for several years now with an old copy of Ed Rosenthal's Closet Cultivator. While I've gotten to the point where I can raise what I think is some pretty high quality and tasty smoke my yields have been no where near what they could be. In fact my New Years resolution is to get at least twice the yield with half as many plants in a grow.
One thing I think I've been doing wrong is rushing the veg stage a little to much. Of course my goal has kind of been to grow a crop as fast as possible. And I've got it down to about 110 days from seed in the dirt to harvest. But, I've only been getting an average of just under a 1/2 oz. per plant yield of cured bud. And all things considered at this point I think I'd rather put in a little more time on each grow (say around 140 to 150 days) and get a lot heavier yield. And from what I've been reading and seeing in these forums I don't think that's an unrealistic goal.
Since it seems I ought to wrap this up with some kind of advice I'll just tell you to try and not over fret about what you're doing. Sometimes you just have to let play out what you've got going and see where it ends up. And then make some tweaks to the methodology on the next attempt at it.
Ye god's man, but I'm toasted. hahaha!
