There were 5 seeds. And all 5 germinated.

One was "too excited" and jumped right out of its seed. Literally. And wouldn't grow after that.

Another seedling produced deformed leaves. Each set was deformed.

Two other plants were OK, but stretched.

And one was really bushy with the shortest internode spacing (by far).

So yes, I'd say I found the best mother of the bunch.

When I grow from seed, I always wait until sexual maturity before flowering. Which means my plant gets big. And in that case, I've found I can get about as much yield from one plant in a 3'7" x 3'7" grow space as from 3 smaller plants in the same space.

When I grow from clones, I do SCROG and use 2-3 plants in that space, but flower sooner than when growing from seed.

You can put a scrog net up at 6 weeks in to flower, it's not going to give you the true scrog effects, but it also won't hurt anything. Worse case it acts like a trellis for support. But if you don't know your pheno and it's stretching traits, it won't hurt.

that's good to hear, I have decided to lst thru flower and scrog next go round, I would rather scrog right the first time so it will give me all the benefits, thx,

Skipped scrog this time. I plan on forcing a mother out of whatever plants female that does well. Then I'll do a SOG next time around. Thanks for the tips everyone.

Yes , I understand all of this.

You are bottlenecking your pheno selection by choosing a mother from veg.

Those plants you tossed could've been higher quality buds than the one you kept, you'll never know now.

I guess I'm.just wondering, how are you choosing a mother plant when you don't even know what kind of flowers the plant produces? It seems that you are arbitrarily choosing the best one based on feelings and how you think they look.

I had 3 healthy plants to choose from (one died during germ, and the other was obviously deformed). I only have room to flower one big plant at a time, and I don't have room to keep a big mother plant. So I chose the one that had the tightest internode spacing (by far). So that's how I got down to one plant.

But I do admit I've never given much thought to your point: that "inferior" veg plants can outperform their counterparts in flowering. How often does this occur? Is it a regular thing? Thanks.

Ah , I understand now.

I forget what it is like to not have space to grow... I have all the space I could ever want. My limitations are my own ability to work and $, not space.

As far as your ?, i know I've had some plants that just don't perform in veg. Girl Scout Cookies was one of them. She grew very slowly in veg, all.of my other plants out performed her totally. But, I was told going into it that she was a slow grower. So, although she vegs slowly, the flowers are worth it quality wise.

This past year I grew out some of my Gorilla Glue #4 S1 seeds. One plant in particular looked like shit. I nearly threw it out but, because it was summer time, I decided to plant it out side with some compost. I ignored it the whole season, didn't even give water. I got about 5zips of some very tasty smoke off of it, I'm glad I didn't destroy her...

Triangle Kush, the mother of OG kush, is also a slow vegger.


Time and space are $ though, flower space is expensive and only the best make it. It is unfortunate to think of all the possible gems that have been tossed because of grower constraints.
