150w hps should cover a 1.5'x1.5'ft area, and should be no bigger than 15 inches.

does this sound likenyour plants will fit said area?

My close friend runs a 150w and cfl's in a 2*2 tent with fantastic results.
If you are only growing for personal use and are not a heavy smoker that
would typically be a great starter light.

i was going to get the 250 watt one but you still dont think thats enough for two plants? Ill get the 400 if thats the case ... also would this be for veg/flower or just flower

I am thinking of that light too. Its not going to work well for two or three plants. The rule of thumb is 100 watts or better per plants. If you had two plants you'd be starving one for some light. A 400 watt hps would be better suited to give two plants ample light. If you want three Id get a 600 watt. Your cfl's aren't going to do much, so Id use those for a hitting those bottom areas the light might not quite get to.

The 400 requires a ballast. I'd rather run a 400 than a 250 I could buy at Fred Meyer. 250's usually don't have a ballast (correct me if I'm wrong)

You can get a 400w setup off ebay for super cheap. Bout the same price as a 250.
