150w hps

So for my personal first time try I bought a 150w hps to try. During the Winter I love the thing but with it being early July Heat is becoming an issue. It easily can get 90-95F under that puny lamp. Even with a 6" fan blowing directly on the fixture. Ambient temps are more or less 82-85F average, I wish I would have got a bigger hps but then again I dont because of heat. This is a closet grow 2x4x10 not exact but close Have not measured.
I leave the door open 24/7 usually with window ac on, I recently ran into slow growth & leave cupping, So I have to get to the root of the problem Lol. First I thought the fan blowing 65F wind directly on the plant was causing massive transpiration, Because the plant leaves show no sign of plant heat stress meaning the color is still green & they stand healthy. Could be humidity as well maby? buy a gauge this weekend along with a p.h checker I have been using just plain tap water.
Sorry for the long read to btw.

Put your hand under the light, 3 foot... Raise your hand up until it feels warm but not hot.(your hand should be about 12-15 inches from the light. (From looking at your plant I can see that it's got some heat stress, so 15 inches might be too close still even for that little 150...) You could get some T5's that would do the same thing and provide more light, actually. Get Red spectrum DayLight bulbs for flower, you won't get spectacular harvest, but, you won't get nothing either, it'd be kind of cool to see an old school tube grow.)
That should be "ok", for what you want to do. Weed can withstand pretty high temps. Outdoors in California folks were growing in 110+ degrees without a problem what so ever.

80 degrees is fine for a soil grow. SO long as you're just within that zone you should be ok.

I see thanks for the reply. I keep it about 10" above canopy & I always do the hand trick but it never hot on my hand. Sometimes a little warm but never ever hot for my hand.

1 time every 3-4 days. I was only misting & damping the top layer 2x daily but I just found out like a noob to water through completely until drainage at bottom. I did that 1st time 3 days ago & soil is still wet.

And by misting I was misting the leaves as well with a 6" fan on high setting blowing on the leaves directly making them shake but not break them or anything. I thought i was doing good but im not sure anymore.

don't mist... leave the fan on. you want the fan to blow over the top of the plants. (basically you want to direct airflow so that it blows between the light and the tops of your plants.. if you get my meaning)....

What I do with watering is, count how many days from the last time I watered, until the plant begins to wilt.... Water the day before it wilts. SO if it wilts on day 5, water on day 4...

Yes I understand that now lol. I had it directly on them. Could the plant be experiencing transpiration stress from the prolonged wind on them for a constant week from sprout?
I also turned off the hps & put 2 cfl's to replace for a bit for the better light spec for veg.

Useing a bag of shultz soil I left open as well. It was left open for about a month but was still fresh & moist as far as I could tell. I plan on transplanting to FFOF this friday as well to see if it helps.

https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=6913 I gave that a read & it would seem the fan would be causing the majority of the problem. The problem now being one can only look to new growth to see if the problem is fixed, Because if transpiration to the point of closing or (in my case cupping) the leave usually 100% of the time dies off and rarley fixes itself due to the destruction of cells from dehydration within the leave.

Just an FYI, If its the light im thinking of, it pulls 4.5Amps, which is ~500W at 120v, That would account for the extra heat, because it has to be dissipated somewhere. You would be better off going with a 400W Hps, will cost a little bit more, but uses LESS electricity and gives you more light.

you must of made a mistake somewhere, a light sold as 150w will not draw 500w that is just ridiculous
perhaps it will draw 175-200w

heat is fine man worry if its going over 34-35c as i have my plants always on round 31 32 c never a issue i think u have over watered ur plant due to the lower leaves drooping and going yellow there as i have seen this countless times here 2nd ph is not a issue in soil people here will say ph ph ph but they are wrong ;) 3rd get some food into that girl no strong nutes i would say like a kelp seaweed fert super thrive rizo run that at half ml per ltr for the first 3 weeks

Thanks for the reply guys, I also though the same thing Skunkd0k. You think overwatering Rob? Like I said above I was only misting the top layer of soil & leaves daily Not even enough to penetrate the first 3" of soil. I watered the first time untill I seen it run all the way through the soil 3 days ago.

You also said up to 18" away from canopy, Are you sure with a 150w thats sounds a bit far for only 15,000 lumens.

I had some problems with mine, I found that two or more fans blowing right on the bulb helped immensely. I also got a humidifier and the plant enjoyed it. It's an old grow and we chatted a hell of a lot in the thread, but you can look here.
