I told farmer that using clear solo cups would allow a grower to see when the roots hit the sidewalls.
He said good idea, but since algae can develop when exposed to sun (clear cups) use the clear cups as a sleeve, and put a red cup over it. Check the roots? Lift the clear cup. "Saw' right!??", senor Wenches? Then let the clear cup drop back down into the red cup again.
Slow-boat delivery but the price is right.

That's how I used to do it. Then you can tell exactly when to transplant.

I used to also punch holes throughout the clear cup. You will end up watering more, but roots do enjoy fresh air.
