how many sq feet of optimal (7,000-10,000 lumens) light is given off by a 1kw hps system? also whats the suggested amount of space between the canopy and light source?

a typical 1000 watt light gives off 140,000 lumens, so 14 to 20 square feet
you keep the light as close to the canopy as you can without causing radiant burning of the plant. if your hand can stand the temperature, then so can your plant. the actual distance can vary greatly depending on whether you are using an air cooled hood, cool tube, or standard hood.
Most run a 4x4 tray with 1000w. I did see an adjust a wing grow with a 1000w that spread over a 4x8 area. Most of the time with 1000 watters you don't really raise or lower it. I know plenty of guys who have their 1000 watters mounted permanently to the ceiling that are 8-9ft high. 1000's are that powerfull.
Mine were too low on my last grow and I bleached the crap out of my plants. I had other issues too. My guess is week genetics versus the light being too close.
