I don't know what they do to make commercial compost tea last longer. I am assuming they put in some sort of preservative but that is just a guess. I was putting mine in a 10 gallon rubbermaid tub. I would make a layer on the bottom of the tub of about 2-3 inches of compost, sprinkle on a couple of tablespoons of guano and a few tablespoons of sucunat. Then I'd add about 3 gallons of water and run an air pump to mix it. This would usually stay good for about 48 hours. Now I make a half pitcher at a time. I make a 2-3 inch layer at the bottom of the pitcher sprinkle on 1 tablespoon of guano and sucunat and fill it halfway. This is about a quart. I make it about 12 hours before I plan to use it. It starts to smell much sooner than the larger amount. Usually within 24-36 hours. I haven't researched why this is. I think it has something to do with the micro organisms in the tea using up all the available food in the mix. Then when they start to die off it begins to smell. This is just my best guess though. I'm sure someone on this sight knows exactly why this stuff has such a short shelf life.
