We got our first sprouts 2 weeks ago, they were originally in miracle grow soil with no perlite in solo cups. We realized very quickly that was a mistake and we were waiting to get new soil but ran out of time and our plants got rootbound in the cups. We transplanted them 2 days ago to real pots so they should be good in them for a bit. We think it is time to give them nutrients and we have some 20-20-20 fertilizer here, but unfortunately we still don't have a ph tester so we are wary of giving them fertilizer before the ph tester is here. Another thing is the older leaves on the majority of the plants are yellow and looking bad but all of the new growth looks really good. So hopefully they should just get better from here on out.

Our grow room is a separate room in the basement with the walls covered in plastic sheeting (we are going to use white posterboard when we can). Right now we have 16
5700k cfls as well as 6 or so 3000k bulbs. Next friday when paychecks come in we will be buying a 600watt hps/mh combo from ebay. We have a humidifier going, a fan to help with stem strength and circulation as well as a radio playing bob marley constantly.


Anyway here are pictures taken today of all of our babies, any comments or suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

They look like they have been heavily over-watered, and possibly have a PH problem. Do NOT use that 20-20-20 shit... it is not appropriate for growing marijuana. Hold off on giving nutrients until you transplant into real containers. You should allow the soil to get almost completely dry before watering. Every 4 days is typical. Don't feel bad though... over-watering is probably the single most common mistake made by new growers. I'm glad you realized that Miracle Grow products are bullshit. They have no place in a marijuana garden. Get yourself some FoxFarms Ocean Forest soil. It is well-suited to growing herb. As for nutrients, stick with FoxFarms GrowBig, BigBloom, and TigerBloom. If you use half-strength concentrations, you can't go wrong. Are you in Philly? If so, let me know

First of all thanks for the comments and input. Secondly do you really think they have been over watered? While we haven't gotten a good watering schedule down, we have been watering them when we felt necessary which was only when the soil was thoroughly dry. The only thing about watering is we are not sure how much to water them at a time. We give them a good amount but nothing quantifiable, we use a water bottle and just give them until it looks decent. I would love a specific amount we should be watering them if that's possible.

A ph problem, however, is highly possible as we don't have a ph tester. Let me tell you a ph tester is number one on our list of shit the babies need but we just don't have the money this second. Friday though I get paid so that will solve that problem.

About the nutrients though we were going to give them the 20-20-20 nutes which I heard were good with 24 hour lighting. 10/15 of them are in 6" pots so I think thats a perfectly reasonable container to give nutes in. Also when I was trying to diagnose the plants I ran into the table as well as that guide from icmag and it looks to me like they are going through nutrient deficiency, most likely potassium and nitrogen and possibly magnesium. That as well as how much they were rootbound makes me think they need some nutes immediately. Ideally we would be using ocean farm soil but at least until we transplant them to bigger pots we can't. We are still using the miracle grow but now have a lot of vermiculite as well(they were out of perlite) and the soil's consistency is a lot better now.

If anyone has any other comments that would be great and thanks for actually giving a good detailed response rolla, more are welcome. oh and rolla check your pm's

Oh and one more thing, a lot of the plants have shown serious improvement since I took those pictures which was 2 days ago. The lower leaves on many of the plants are really shitting the bed though. They were very yellow and twisted before we transplanted them and not long after they seemed a bit better but it seems like they are too fucked up to fix themselves at this point. Should we trim off those leaves or just let them die off by themselves. All of the new growth looks really good so I don't really know what to do about them. And if we should trim them how exactly would we go about that. More specifically where would we cut the leaves as to not harm the plants.

I picked up a ph tester today so now I want to give the plants some nutes at 1/4 strength. Another thing is how much should I water them at a time.

Could someone give me a reply about the watering and nutes? I want to do this as soon as possible. Again I'm going to give them 20-20-20 because we have the lights on 24/7 apparently that's good for that lighting schedule.

1/4 strength 20-10-10 is what you want, mainly nitrogen for the vegging and phophorus and potassium for flowering. (ps if your talking about the ph meter id say those dont have too much of a rep, stick with ph test strips..can be found at wal-mart, lowes)

Yea since that post I found out that our ph was much too high so it was locking out nutrients, which is why I thought it was so necessary to add nutes. We are adjusting the ph and waiting until they are at least at the correct ph and looking better. Then we will give them nutes.

im located outside philly and just startin up some plants as well, your thread has helped me quite a bit as im in a very very similar situation as far as getting ph meter and a hps soon, check out ebay for ocean forest..found a guy that has free shipping the shipping on soil is ridiculous.

well I'm glad my thread helped you. I definitely recommend getting a ph tester as soon as possible, not having it and having too high of a ph slowed us down a lot.

I'll definitely try and find free shipping that would be ridiculous.
