It used to be said that 24 hour veg' was pointless as plants could only photosynthesise for 18 hours max'... I think it was Jorges Cervantes who was the biggest shouter of this 'fact'.Plants are not like a ni-cad battery. They are like humans, a carbon based life form that takes in a certain amount of fuel before it has to expel it by some means of energy transfer. So since our planet hasn't evolved around a 48 hour light cycle then that idea won't work. It might for a short peroid but like you they will eventually give up and be so exausted, then die.
Although I think I agree that giving a longer light cycle will cause the plant to reveg' itself. I was thinking hard about this when a sudden memory occurred to me.
I remember force flowering some feminised grapefruit. I gave them a 24 hour light period by mistake... the pistils that were there went brown, and flowering was delayed for around 3 weeks. Nightmare, how could I forget.
