Ok so this is my second grow only this grow will be inside of a 42" steel cabinet. I have done all the research I can do but i still can reach a solid decision on what to buy as a light for this new box. The two i am considering are a 600w cool tube HID setup and a blackstar 240w LED setup. The main thing I concerned with in picking a light is how they will perform with my plants. (mostly growth rate but also amount of yield) Cooling in this case i am not worried about and they both cost the same. Can anyone offer me some advise on which would be the better choice and why?

Here are examples of the lights i was referring to:

600W HID

I'd go with the 600w HID. I've seen a lot of disappointed LED users but very few HID.

use the 240w its cooler, more efficient, last like 10 years. i've seen some nice articles in magazines now finally about flowering under leds and they say they are legit now.

I voted 600w, mostly because you can't really go wrong with one. The LED's from my understanding are not all created equally, some brands kind of blow while others kick butt.

I vote for the 600w, I've seen too many led users that just don't get the same yield/quality.

Oh and I couldn't help but notice what the ebay seller even says on this matter:

How does this light compare with HID lighting performance? We sell HID lighting too, so there is no use in us claiming anything that is not 100% ture. LED lights are more money up front, but you save on Electric consumption, cooling costs (which are huge) and bulb replacement. The typical error made is that people do not use enough LEDs. With enough lighting, these 2w LEDs will produce a great yeild. Typically 10% less than a comparable HID system but with faster tomato flowering and lowered operational costs. If you are not with your grow, I personally do not like the idea of an HID light burning unattended.

That LED is 3W which you could say is the 'good' version..
I would pick it over the 600w hps personally.

you say 42 inches. The flowering model of that led will cover 3 ft by 2ft area which is small by comparison to the coverage of a 600w hps but you got to remember that this particular led light only draws and actual 135 watts but will produce a fantastic yield for a small footprint. I think that it's all about grams per watt and it is easily achievable to get 1.2 to 1.4 grams per watt with that led fixture. In reality most growers get to pull about 0.7 grams per watt with HID. So do the numbers and work it out for yourself, only you can decide which way to go, anyway I wish you luck and post pics of whatever you do :-)

that LED light is shit. The increased power of the 3W diode does provide better light penetration, but puts out less light as it loses more to heat. Chances are they're using a 120 degree lens which means light is getting spread out everywhere. You'd think this is a good thing but it's not. You want a more focused diode. The footprint is smaller but it means you'll need less lights overall to get the same performance.

good LED grow lights are expensive. If they're charging $20 for a 240W grow light, you'd probably just be better off buying the time tested HID.

$20 for 240watt. Where is that price advertised ?

how big is the cabinet? how many plants do you want to bloom at a time and how big are they? I have the blackstar and it works great for a small grow, a couple 3 footers or so. and not having to worry about a blower for heat is great. of course a 600 watt is gona give u bigger plants, but also more maintenance,(bulbs, blowers, ballasts). all you can do is listen to everybodys opinion and figure out what is best for your situation.

hid's are really powerful beacuse i have them on my car as lights, but led is almost the same thing, but if u going to get led get them from a good brand beacuse some led's are shit beacuse all the chinese market trying to sell and make money, but i would go with that hid :),BTW PEOPLE CAN YOU USE THESE LIGHTS OR UR VEGG AND FLOWER?

There's no reason you can't use them for both, most all the better LEDs are at least quad band anyway. I personally love LEDs, and think that they can be the future but the op just wanted the best in terms of growth/yield, that is going to be the HID. Now if you want to factor in efficiency, that's a whole new story since LEDs are amazingly efficient. I've been really tempted lately to start building a nice LED panel, sounds like a fun DIY project and hopefully I'll get some nice grow lights out of it.
