You disagree with the first sentence? Cops don't need any reason to legally pat someone down? Really? You are hilarious dude.

I didn't read the story either, I thought they got popped at the restaraunt.

"While parked at a Maverick gas station, patrons of the store noticed some of the teens smoking drugs."

250+ teens gave up their drugs and that's the huge stash picture?

Lol I see what looks like a hashbrown in a plastic bag, copenhagen, cough drops, some brown shit in a bag? (Instant coffee?)

Gastanker, what the story illustrates to me is the difference between the real and ideal worlds. In the real world, bet on cops using every unauthorized advantage to advance their job, as long as there is a good chance they can pull it off. It is no accident that the most effective cops are psychological manipulators of stage-actor quality ... the perception of what they can do in a given situation will trump the actuality. When the cop's eyes say "I can, and you can't prove otherwise", the price of being right is higher than almost everyone will be willing to forfeit. jmo. cn

I totally agree. Its terrifying what the police are allowed to tell you. The crazy straight up lies they can make up to scare you into a confession is not a good thing in my mind. More reason for people to be knowledgeable about their rights.

One of the bags they confiscated was from a dispensary, it has a UPC and says 3.5 grams on it.

The cookies next to it are as well.

Possession of 'less than an ounce' in Utah is a misdemeanor and you can do 6 months in jail and have to pay 1,000 dollar fine at the maximum.

I definitely think these kids got off way easy and should be thankful. Sure we have the right to refuse a search but as soon as a dog points out your bag those rights go right out the window. Couple dumb fucks messed it up for everyone. Seems to always be the case.

am i the only one concerned about parents trying/being able to sue about this? the article said parents sued for "negligence" the last time this happened.

i didn't look into the facts, but from what i did read i agree with you. they most likely signed a waiver to even go on the trip. i don't see how the company sponsoring it can be to blame. it says "unchaperoned". so i would think it would be on the parents.

Cops will say anything to get you scared into doing things.
The Kids got off easy if any one has their balls hanging out it's the cops.
They showed it on the news this morning, sounds like a bounch of spoiled bratts that won't see their good givings.

IDK why everyone is acting like the police did anything illegal when frankly this has happened with the same company before I believe last year it said and the police witnessed people smoking weed in public. They were fair and nobody got arrested and nobody has to pay fines or attorney fees etc. A lot of people in this thread sound like they have never dealt with police or the court system.
