250W HID in a small closet?

Hey guys,

Just a quick and basic question: Will a 250W HID lamp in a closet (4ft x 2ft x 6ft) be generating too much heat??

And what kind of ventilation/cooling would be necessary??

Thanks.

it probably won't generate too much heat with proper ventilation. just make sure you pull the warm air out and cool air in...

Thanks. What size/power fans would I need? Trying to keep it low, so would 2 computer fans (about 45 CFM) be enough to handle ventilation?

for a closet i'd recommend not using computer fans. i've tried 2 in a small cab and they just didn't work whatsoever. and this was with 3-4 cfls, not even an hps. i resorted to using a window fan, and it works for me. sorry i can't help you out with what to get, but i'd say comp fans really aren't going to be enough...

hey, a 250 watt hps will need extracting as the heat build up will kill your plants pretty fast!!! you will need at least a 4in extracta,! ideally a rvk 100 or simular! tyr and make 2-4 4 inch holes in the bottom of the cab, use some 4 inch ducting thru em and bend it to 90 degree's, this will make the intakes light proof! place you extractor at the highest point possible! as it extracts it will draw fresh air in thru the passive intakes,
passive (no fan) active (fan) you could also use a couple of p.c fans in the bottom of the cab to bring air in. also a small oscilating fan moving the air around inside will also be beneficial! if you cab is small maybe a 250 watt enviro light will would be ideal, blue for veg and red for flowering, these draw 250 watts of power but emitt over 400 watt of usable light that is correctly spectrumed for growth and flower, bulbs cost between 35-50 gbp , need no ballast and you can hold em in your hand after a week of having them on 24/7.
yeilds are decent, just not as dense as a sodium!

hmm, having a proper extractor fan is not really an option for me.

So if I do get a 250W CFL, would I still need the extractor? Or would the 2 comp fans cope?

Thanks for the info guys!

250W cfl will generate more heat than a 250W hid?? i dont think so friend.

So, i definately can't get a 250W HID in there with just those 2 fans? I will obviously have circulation fans inside, that would keep the plants cool as well.

i heard 250W envirolites are out of production. are there any other companies that produce good 250W CFLs? If not, how many 125W cfls would be necessary for a good grow (3-4 plants) ?

Thanks.

250 watt enviro does not put out the same heat at all!!! i run 6 of em ,i leave one on 24 hours a day 7 days a week! i can hold it in my hand any time i like, if it was a sodium it would take my skin off within 20 mins of being on,
check my grows out at breedbay

mike, 4 125's ideally but i have seen some impressive yeilds under 2 125 enviro's and that was 6 bubble gum, about 12-14 inches tall @ the beggining of flower,@ chop they were about 22-23 inches tall, just over a oz and half dried bud weight per plant....
you can also flower under the blue enviro's it just takes the plants about a week longer to respond, personally found that 1blue 1 red during the first 3 weeks of flower then change the blue for a red for the final weeks.i have found the plants wont stretch as much during the first weeks of flowering.

nice one THC, made my day!
So I think I will go for the 2 125W enviros.

Cheers dude!

no probs m8,
with the enviro's go for the best reflection you can! keep the plants about 12 inch tall at the start of flower as the enviro's cant penertrate to the lower part of the plant, so its a good idea to remove some of the lowest branche's for cuttings, with a little circulating fan you can putthe enviro's as close as a inch if to the canopy and the 125 enviro produce 315 watts of usable light to the plant altho only using 125 watts of electric, quids in really.have a go, you will be impressed m8, get it dialed in right ,good nutrient and youll get a good yeild! that yeild on the bubblegums was in soil!! so hydro would of been a killer for what they are imho!
