250W HPS, 2 Unknown Strains

I acquired some seeds out of 2 delicious batches of smoke I had, and I've always wanted to test my green thumb, so I decided to turn my 4.5'x4.5' closet into an indoor setup. Bear with me; this is my first grow but on my current budget, I feel I'm on the right track.

I forgot to take pics of the germination and sprouting stage, but the pics are about 5 days into growth. The majority of my growroom construction is out of the way, just needs a little Mylar-love and a little more framework, and I'll be all set.

SUPPLIES:
1. 5 seeds (2 strains, both unknown)
2. Jiffy pellets
3. Solo cups
4. 4 Large (recycle-bin type) tubs
5. Bathroom exhaust fan
6. Homemade activated carbon filter
7. 3" ducting tube
8. 6" Inline Duct Booster fan
9. 2 regular fans (1 medium, 1 small)
10. 250W Hydrofarm HPS
11. Hygrometer
12. Some wood scraps I had laying around
13. Potting mix + some greensand
14. Some small chain and hook screws
15. Power strip
16. Indoor timer

First, the construction..

I installed the bathroom exhaust fan in the closet's ceiling, and hooked it up to the switch that had previously controlled a light. Attached to the exhaust fan is a 3" duct tubing with a DIY activated carbon filter running behind the drywall, down to a soffit vent at the edge of roof.

Then, I put up the light-hanging hardware. I drilled 2 hook screws into the ceiling (being sure they were in studs) and used short lengths of chain to hang the 250W HPS.

Next, my closet was never built with a door, as it is raised about foot higher than my floor (see pictures) so I built a makeshift frame to support a sliding wooden door. My ceiling is slanted, so this made the process a little more difficult, but it's hard to explain so check out the pictures. I also attached a 6" inline duct booster fan to the framework to act as an intake when the doors are shut. Still not quite finished with the framework, but it's working for now.

With the majority of the construction done, I started working on my somewhat ghetto pots. I'm using 4 tubs similar to old recycling bins. I took two of the bins and drilled 6 holes in the bottom of each one. Then, I stacked those into the two un-drilled bins for drainage. I mixed up my VERY simple potting mix recipe (generic garden store potting mix, and some greensand), and filled the bins. The potting mix contained most of what the soil recipes I've looked at called for. Maybe the proportions weren't perfect but, it seems to be working.

After germinating my 5 seeds, 4 popped up but the first to do so died, so I'm left with 3 healthy seedlings. I know this isn't the optimal situation, but three's enough for my first try.

That's pretty much where I'm at for now. At about day 8 since the first sprout popped up, and they're looking pretty healthy. I have Vita Grow nutes and Greg Green's Grow Bible on the way in the mail. I'll update with any news if anyone's interested.

Feel free to comment with suggestions, but I know where I've cut corners, so keep the criticism minimal, please.

I know some of you aren't going to agree with my potting, but like I said, I'm a noob, so it's all about learning.

Yeah, but I figured I'd rather go too big than too small. I plan on forcing flowering once they're right around a foot so they don't grow into the light.

So today I started building a oxygenated water source. I snagged a 5 gallon bucket that my restaurant was tossing out, and grabbed my old fish tank air pump, tubing, and air stone. I drilled a nice size whole in the bucket and installed a small tap off of a cooler similar to those orange Gatorade coolers used by sports teams. I'll be finishing the assembly for it tomorrow when I make space for it in the room, so I'll post pictures then. God damn, I love getting creative and doing projects. This is my fulfillment.

So I've made a few changes in the last week. Finally bought some mylar and got that put up (wasn't fun). Also bought a metal halide bulb for the vegging process, but it seems that whenever my air conditioner's compressor kicks over, the light cuts off and kind of "reboots". Takes about two minutes for it to come back on. Anybody know if that's gonna cause extra stress on the plants? My HPS bulb never did that, so if it will potentially cause unnecessary stress, I'll put it back in.

Also, I got my Vita Grow ferts in the mail, along with the Grow Bible by Greg Green (I recommend this to any noob). Picked up some fish emulsion and Bloom ferts as well from a local hydroponics store (love that place). Last, i got a 4" inline duct fan on top of my 6" for EXTRA intake. Geeze, I realized how much shit I bought after I typed it all out.. no wonder I'm almost broke.

Got some new pics. Sorry about the shitty plant pics. Camera sucks.

naw man consider it a 2 minute cloud passing by you'll see no effect my 2cents only reason I'd deal with it also is that MH is a 6500k light were as hps is high in the yellow so mainly 2700 6500 for veg 2700 for flower but its up to you mang

yeah, I thought about the cloud thing too. I just figured the sun was WAY stronger than any light, so they're still getting some through the clouds. But I'll let em go and see what happens. After all, it's all about experimentation.

HPS works fine all the way through..... MH WILL help the internodes stay shorter, but as soon as you flip them they will stretch anyways under the hps.....

Would you say it limits the overall stretch? As you can see, my space is limited so any little bit helps.

keep the light close and they shouldnt stretch really im using a 150watt hps and mine didnt really stretch a lot

Yeah, im just worried about theh heat issue. I've got it about 18" up right now, and the plants are quickly getting hardier. I'll probably try lowering it tonight and watch for any curling.

Haven't updated in a while, so I figured it's time. My little girls are doing well. I'm feeding them Vita Grow SuperGrow and fish emulsion every few days, and they're shooting up like crazy. I'm doing a little pruning here and there in an attempt to keep them more fat than tall due to my lack of space. May have to LST if they keep growing at this rate so they don't get cooked during flowering.

Mind you, these pics are from two different photo sessions appr. 8 days apart, so you can see their rate of growth. Enjoy.

Oh yeah, the two in the same bin I've been pruning to keep them short. That's why they look find of spindly. The taller of the two is definitely female. The shorter hasn't shown yet. The bushy one has EXTREMELY small hairs at two internodes, so I'm pretty sure. Lets hope for the best! 3 for 3!

Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm the proud owner of three beautiful teenage girls.:-P 3 for 3 on my first indoor grow.. not too shabby.

Had a little run-in with spider mites, but the neem oil seems to be working. The bud sites are coming along nicely. I'd say another 6 weeks, and they'll be coming down.

I'll post new pics in a little while.
