I think you are right about not being able to add and divide the individual bulbs. an average does not mean that you are only getting that part of the spectrum. however, I think having 2 different spectra does mean you will get more of the middle part than either one alone. I'm thinking overlapping bell curves here.

Remember, the temperature of the bulb is only a rough measure of it's PEAK color. Again, think bell curves. The bulb has lesser, but not necessarily neglible, amounts of light at higher and lower values.

The same goes for the plant. Even if you say that it has peak growing efficiency at 5500K, that does not mean it can't utilize other temps. In fact, my guess would be that if you had a bulb that emitted at ONLY EXACTLY 5500K, and another that emitted AROUND 6500K, the plant would prefer the latter.

Anyway, this is getting very technical and I am not claiming to be an expert. I've been reading a lot of grow stuff lately, lol. Everybody is welcome to toss in their 2 cents.

I have read a lot of growers saying 6500K is fine for vegging, and sometimes it gets a little better if you add in some 2700K. As always, ymmv.

good point made by godkas, the spectrum is important here, much better results with red in flowering than blue, especially with cfl. good luck!
