i would go to at least #5's or 7's when they are rootbound. If you use an airier mix containing more perlite or coco or whatever you use, you will need to water more often. I would say you should shoot for your soil to dry completely within 3 days. I feel like this gives you less of a chance of over watering, and more opportunities to feed at the same time. Make SURE that the soil is dry when you dig a couple inches down, before watering. It is also important to properly water you containers. You want to completely drench the entire container of soil when watering, so make sure there is a fair amount of runoff. This ensures that you are taking full advantage of your container space. Otherwise there wouldnt be any reason for those bigger pots.
