3 or 5 gallon pots for Afghan -

I have 4 healthy seedlings growing in 16 ounce cups. This is a very small personal medical grow, so no huge operation. The plants are just starting to show their second set of jagged leaves and are looking healthy. I have a little bit of time before I transplant into their final containers.

My question is should I go with 3 or 5 gallon pots? I know Afghan is a shorter strain, so I would think that a 3 gallon would work, but I have no indoor "pot" based experience.

That would depend on how long you intend to veg them b4 flower. They will double or triple in size the first few weeks of flowering so keep that in mind. I use 3 gal pots and they work great for me. Five gal pots will accomodate larger plants for a longer grow. Even if you were to consider a long veg I would transplant to the 3 gal for the veg period and then the 5 gal just b4 flowering. You have many options. Something else to consider when deciding on the veg period is the lighting for flowering. Bigger lights give you more penetration. If you are going to use a smallish light you don't want the plants to veg so large that the light cannot penetrate the bottom 1/2 of the canopy.

Thanks LT! I am using a T5 fixture right now as the plants (seedlings still) are small and delicate, but will be switching to a 400 watt MH in the next few days. The current plan is 4 to 5 weeks of 18/6 veg once I change out tot he HID. I will take inventory then and see where they are. I want to keep them from getting "too big". 18" of growth during veg would make me happy, but I could go to 24" tall with the space I have.

You are right about transplanting at the time when I switch to flowering. That is the way I will go as it makes sense to me.

18 " of grown may not take you that long. Plants can grow 1-2 inches per day (optimally). Veg until they are half the size you want full grown. But remember, they may triple in size as well. So an 18 inch plans could become almost 5 feet tall at the end of flowering.... that's a good sized plant!

Hey MN! 5 foot tall would be too big for the grow tent I have. I would be a topping fool at that point, or I would start into major bending to control the height. The bending thing actually would be fun, but for now I am really just tryign to figure out straight indoor growing.
