3600 watts for 4x4 space... too much?

Aight so here's the deal guys, me and my bro just recently threw down around 5 thousand bone on 9 LED UFO's (which according to the manufacturer throw out around the equivalent of a 400 watt HID (grab a calc, do the math, ok so thats like 3600 watt) which we are intending on using to light our 4x4 grow room which houses a 36 plant aeoroponic system (with Co2 and all the other bells and whistles), so my question for the pro's here is this, is this un-god-ly amount of light simply too much? or will my little babies thrive under this intense spectacle of enginering goodness? (greatness?)

not an expert....but to get a happy yield from LEDs you would need a whole fucking lot of them.

i just dont think they are good enough by themselves. as they are great as supplemental lighting!!!!!

well according to this months issue of high times, who apparently conducted their own test's using the LED UFO pitted against a 400 watt hps, yielded only 5% (by weight, is that obvious, maybe, but ill say it anyway, wanna fight about it, i know people man, seriously, i'll mess you up...naw im just playin i aint like that) less than the LED UFO, so iz that bullshit or what? am i collecting cans now for nothin?

LED's are definately a good supplemental light. They will speed bud dev. and increase yeilds but its important to also have HPS. I bought a bunch of red led's from the department of agriculture....got 30 discs of 500 lights each for only $20 bucks a pop. I did two grows. one had just leds, the other had a 600 HPS and four discs of 500 LED's. The LED only closet alone produced 1/3 as much as with a 600, and i had 8 discs alone, vs only 4 in the room with the 600. I yeilded nearly a pound in my hps/led room...in only a three foot by two foot closet! and only about 170 g in my purely led room. Invest in some 600 hps and you will be good!

if you look at the photosythesis curve of plants and the curves of blue and red led's, they overlap almost perfectly. They are super efficient, and since they dont waste light the plant cant use, they work very well. they also last about 15 years of continuous use...i think you overpaid though. White bulbs also work well, as they contain both blue and red in a balance that works nicely. I only have red LED's, so I would have to add blue ones to run a real test. nasa says plants only require about 8% blue to 92% red, so maybe thats what the hps was providing. Just make sure you have a few blue ones here and there. Did you know nasa uses leds to grow in space?

Wow first time I've heard somebody dropping $5k on marketing hyped product. I've played with LEDs that claim to be as powerful as a 400W, my end result is BS!
LEDs are just too weak and don't produce all the light the plant wants.

You should take all those UFO lights and put it on one plant, then you might get some results

not only that.... but i would make sure you have tons of red LEDs panels...you're going to need them for flowering!

if i were you....i'd sell like 2 or 3 of them and invest in an mh/hps dual spectrum light system

don't listen to all the criticism man, those things have been worked on and worked on, and wouldn't be getting all the hype if they didn't work (I also trust high times when it comes to product reviews, and if they said it works...it probably damn well works!). I say slap those puppies over your setup and prove everyone wrong;)

I wish this LED shit would get figured out, just when i make my mind up that it's total hyped up sales tactics i see a grow in a magazine that has amazing results.Anybody else feel like were all a bunch of gunie pigs that are paying out of our pockets to test their new product.

I can see LED being a valueable tool for spectrum enhancement to be used along side HID lights but as a stand alone no way,not yet anyways.

i have done hours of research on this. and i think one very important thing is being left out. USE THEM TOGETHER. why not use LEDs for vegg & HPS flowering. or interlock them. use a 400watt hps and like three or four red LED panels. all this fighting means nothing. all HIGH TIMES said is "there is potenal". which there is. if your growing in a small space where heat is a factor. LEDs are great. but honestly going out and paying 5000 for LED lights is a waste of your money. you could buy like 15(1000watt HPS). and a complete ventilation system, a hydro system. i even saw this computer on EBAY(780$). where it has everything hooked up to a timer. so it will water, lights, temp, hem. ext...im not going to sit here and tell you to return all those. have fun with them, test different amounts and styles of growing with those. see which one works best. because you are a weed revolutaionist.
But the best of luck to you.

PS. please post pics.

do you have a link to that system? are you talking about growtronix?

Honestly, I think its probably overkill. thats alot of wattage for a fairly small room. I too read the article in high times and those sound like a pretty promising product. Too costly for my tastes tho, I bought some cheap LEDs off E-bay just to give it a shot. When I finaly finish up my grow area I get to see how those work. Good luck!

most of the led grow lights ive seen online are only 13-16 watts and have like 225 leds on them. this light has 90 leds and is 90 watts. a quick google on lumen perwat of 1watt leds was very inconsistant with answers from like 30-150 lumens so i dont know. average 400watter puts out about 50000 lumens which is 125 lumens per watt. but some argue that HID's produce some light that unusable to plants. an article (Hydroponics Gardening Retailer Announces Development of New LED Grow Lights) states "The spectrum of light that it emits is also tailored to the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll, caroten, phycoerythrin and phycocyanin, so no light is wasted in the spectrum that plants do not use, such as green light." i personally have no experiance with growing as im doing my first now, but i believe that the science backs it up, and that it probably works just as well if these 1watt leds are as good as claimed.

i would have gone with some hps lites and mh lite w digital ballast a 1000w hps would cover a 4x4 space easy!! that means u could have done ur room for alot less money!! hey u already spent the money u cant do anything about it good luck !!and yes its to many watts for sure u need to find out how many lumes every ufo pumps out and you go from their!!

You should have just purchased a 1000w for a 4' X 4' space. You could have saved over $4500.00

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.
