Sparky4u, cheers for the advice - I certainly agree and am not averse to training plants and providing additional support such as mylar sheeting and possibly even side-lighting. Options for training are somewhat limited with chillies however just as a consequence of most varieties producing pendant pods rather than mirasol types, so good penetration is always going to be needed to ensure developing pods get enough light to grow and ripen healthily... I dare say it is a bit more straightforward to assist with strains of mj as your buds are always growing upwards... am very interested in the results of this grow and must say the plants are certainly looking v. healthy so far! Excellent job :)

The local grow shop tried to talk me out of the LEDs and into the HO T5. I just had to test these for myself. If this project were to fail, I'd try the T5's though. LED = no bulb replacement for years and years. If these work well, that is going to payoff bigtime.
HO T5s have a very long life too. Individual bulbs are user replaceable and cost < $20 per for quality spectrums. Just sayin

3 weeks flowering. I chose new control plants because the yellowing one wasn't a true rep for the HID crowd. You'll see what I mean when you see the HID group. Also, since these are seeds there are short ones and tall ones so I've chosen two control plants from each group.

Overall, they are looking pretty even. If it was cooler the HID plants would be doing better than they are though.

Short ones. LED = left

Tall ones. LED = left

From above, LED = right now

From above, both types in a single shot. LED = right

Dang, wiped out most my postings. I'm day 6 into drying. I chop and hang and it's been the perfect 55-60% humidity. I'll start trimming tomorrow and after a few days in jars I'll weigh.

Sounds great. Thats a terrible shame this thread in particular was wiped out. Not too many high quality comparisons out there.

I set my homepage in my profile to my photobucket album, all the pics are there. Once I get the final weight I'll repost them all.

The final results are in.

Notes:

I did nothing to increase the yield of this crop. My only goal was to use the exact same environment and nute schedule to see what each light produced. Also I used Biobizz nutes, aka 'great taste, low yield'.

Last, I only trimmed the non-popcorn bud. I'm not including popcorn in the totals.

The full picture set is posted at http://s1255.photobucket.com/albums/hh638/justjim3/

The numbers:

LED 96 grams
HID 143 grams

LED 360W
HID 600W

360W / 600W = 60%

96 / 143 = 67%

Approx HID weight untrimmed - 35 grams
Approx LED weight untrimmed - 21 grams

HID dried

LED dried - much more fluffy than the HID

HID (left jar) & LED (right jar) popcorn - untrimmed

HID & LED trim - except major fan leaves which I pull before hanging

Overall, I am glad that I bought these due to my heat issue. My tent was cooking at 86 degrees with only one HID. No way I could add another without AC. Yes, I could have added a second HID and AC for less than the 4 Kessils, but I really wanted to see these in action.

Now that I own 4, I'll buy two more. In a normal grow, I run 6 plants per light so on the LED side, it would be difficult to run 7 kessils (to make up the full 600 watts) over 6 plants. It works out well to run 6 lights for 6 plants.

So, if you have heat issues, or you do not have money issues, Kessils are a good way to go. If you want to pump out mad weight and can deal with the headaches of HID, go for it!

Thanks for watching.

hell yes. thank you for an awesome show. now just drop a couple grand and throw a Lumigrow ES330 up with the Kessil H350s as side lighting. seriously though, thanks for the comparison. you're methodology is very clean and consistent.
