So my buddy had the prop tray with heating mat and heater on it for firs two daysthe rockwoll cubes were over 100 degreesn. I did my best to fix things but sorry to say I got 4 out of 51 seeds to sprout.terrible numbers. Never again will I throw down all seeds at one time. Never leave something in the care of a rookie that you don't mind losing.

Hmm you kinda saved me I think. Starting my seeds shortly and have a heat mat. I have touched it a couple times and thought it was kinda hot and never put 2 and 2 together. I've been having poor results my past 2 grows using this heat mat.... lol -.-

I dont understand all these scientifics to sprouting seeds when all you need is a cereal bowl, a wet paper towel, and a piece of saran wrap over the top. This has always given me nearly 100% success rate and is probably the easiest part of the growing process.

Go ahead and toss the heating mat... you don;t need it and it will just cook your beans.

It's not the mat but the misuse. The mats help prevent damping off, speed up germination and give a healthy start BUT it is not a plug-and-play gig. The dome has to monitored and removed, replaced, vents opened/closed. Misting regularly is a must if humidity is low.

On the other hand I clone by cutting, putting the stems in plain water and waiting for root development. Once roots are out into a root shooter (these days) and at the edge of my veg lights, then moved in closer daily. By the time they are 3 weeks they are out from under a cap under a 1000 HPS, 4 fluoros and 2 side CFLs.

Use a gallon jug with the bottom cut out like a baby greenhouse. Use the cap to control heat & humidity and here's the lesson - the same thing happens under those domes that happens to unmonitored seedling domes with heat mats. Leave the cap on when plant is small and you're not watching and it keels over and dies like a dog left in a locked car with the windows up. Tune into your plants.

I'm in my mid-60's and have used this process ever since an old man showed me to do it that way (minus the Saran) in the 1960's. I use a plain towel over the bowl. Every time I try something "newer or better" it isn't. KISS!

Probably as many rolls of paper towels go to germing seeds as go to other uses.

Used a heat mat to finish germing seeds one time. Silver Haze planted X 6. 5 germed and broke earth but were so leggy in 1 day they had to be babied for a couple weeks while towel germed seedlings were cruising along. Again, though, it is my use of the mat as I see others who use the domes/mats with great success.

If you think it is too hot you can put a towell between the pad and the bottom of the dome. Also if you put it on a hard surface, granite, stone or concrete it will absorb the extra heat.

he always getting sold some unessassary shit from the hydro store. paper towels always work just ha:fire:rd to move it to hydroton with only a root and seed cap. thats why used rockwoll cubes. would have been all good if he didnt have thermostat all the way up past one hundred and a fucking heater blowing on the tray. the cubes were 100.09 degrees when i finally caught it. had been for tw days im surprised four made it. i was so mad those seeds came across the ocean damnit.

51 seeds!! Thats like 300 dollars at least!

I don't have a heating mat.. but from my understanding, you have to buy a thermostat to hook into it. They arent sold together. Without the thermostat it just runs at highest temperature.

Why would you use a heating mat there is no need for it what so ever. Just soak planting media in water, place seeds, give then 24/7 lighting and they will sprout.
