400 Watt Ballast info

Hey guys,
Are most 400 watt ballast able to take 600 watt or 1000 watt bulbs? Is there some sort of standard?
I have a sun system 400 watt hps with remote ballast and im not sure of the model and therefore the specs on it. There is a sticker on the top and it says 400 watt sun system.....

no you will not be able to use a higher watt bulb then what the ballast is rated for.

Oh well.... thanks man. Hey do most older ballasts get real hot? Mine is pretty hot to touch...

ya mine gets pretty hot i just bought five pieces of tile to set mine on as a little heat shield just in case
