the 400 w hps has a higher lumen output than 400 w of cfl so for the same power u get more lumens so id say hps all the way actually for vegging u should be using a metal halide bulb mh not hps.i have 4 plants in veg at the moment and im wondering whats the best to use or will i get the same results using the cfl as i wold useing the hps?
ya it helps a lot thanks man!it all depends really do u have a reflector or is it an oppen bulb a good way to tell for ur conditions is get a thermometer and try and keep it as close to the tops of the plants as possible then drop or raise ur light until u get a nice 75 degrees f then just raise ur light as ur plant grows now thats if u have a reflector if not ur plant will benefit more if u keep ur light down low and grow ur plants around the light instead of underneath.
i use a day/ night thermometer with a indoor and outdoor therm on it i use the small outdoor part for hanging on the tops of my plant closest to the light hope this helps u out
It varies a bit from light to light. Put your hand right above the plants - if it burns your hand within 30 seconds, move it up some. You want the light to feel warm on your hand but not uncomfortable.oh and can any 1 tell me how high dose the hps have to be off the plants? i know the the fcl cant be more than 3inchs
the ballast buzz is normal it means its working lolye if its a magnetic ballest it will make a little buzz continuesly mine did anyway.............ye use the hps for veg and flower and if you can use cfls placed around the middle to bottem of the plant .....more light more yeild.peace

This is only half true. You need less intense light for seedlings. It is all about the lumens - and more are what you want. Vegging with a bigger light, means bigger plants for you, less veg time, and better yield in the end....u need less intense light for vegging than flowering its all about the lumens
i take it u never watched jorge cervantes ultimate grow now that guy knows his shitThis is only half true. You need less intense light for seedlings. Sorry to say, jorge is not the end all and be all of growing. My life isn't complicated now, thanks.i take it u never watched jorge cervantes ultimate grow now that guy knows his shit
i suggest to just download the vid and take his advise after seeing the monster plants he shows u u know he aint lying everybody has theyre own thoughts and ways to do things so if ur not sure about something get a reputable vid or guide and follow that it will make ur life a lot less complicated than posting on here lol
well hes got more rep in my eyes than u do and i didint mean to offend u and didint mean ur life was complicated i was giving advice to the guy who originally asked the question.jorge cervantes ultimate grow is the best grow vid i have ever watched and it would be easyer for him to understand what where talking about if he just watches the video and then takes it from there.Sorry to say, jorge is not the end all and be all of growing. Once again - jorge isn't the end all of growing - and I think you'll find a lot of the more experienced growers here will agree. I wasn't arguing over light spectrum - I didn't even mention it, as what you said was correct. I'm talking about light intensity - and that is a different story. You told the guy he needs less intense lights for vegging. That isn't true. The color spectrum has nothing to do with the intensity. If I use 400w of CFL's, in the 5000-6500K spectrum, vs 400w of MH - the MH light will be a LOT more intense than the CFL's - and provide a bigger, bushier plant from that intensity (aka penetration).well hes got more rep in my eyes than u do and i didint mean to offend u and didint mean ur life was complicated i was giving advice to the guy who originally asked the question.jorge cervantes ultimate grow is the best grow vid i have ever watched and it would be easyer for him to understand what where talking about if he just watches the video and then takes it from there.
im not saying ur wrong ur actually right if ur only looking at lumens the light spectrum also plays a huge part wich is why i use bth mh and hps for my full grow just i use more mh light for veg and more hps for flower.
ever notice how in the fall the sun seems more orange its also called the harvest sun anyways i wont drag this on any further since trying to teach an old dog new tricks is pointless good luck with ur lights bud and happy cropping
i couldint watch the vid niether at first its in the newb section under grow vids.jesus lads no need to fight thanks very much for both your inputs both very vaild i have a good idea now, weed man i tryed to wach that video but i need to down load something first, oh and that is tinfoil the room is ach a triangle shape so its only 5 foot high at its peak so i was thinking if the hps os at the top it will have a natural reflector because its a v shape probly no good for the cfl because it will be to far away whats wrong with tinfoil?
