I am goign to purchase a 400W HPS
and i had a few questions.
i have an option of getting a used one on ebay for about 60$ after shipping, but it has light wear and its not cooled or anything.

or i can go to
Sun System 5 400W HPS Enclosed Grow Light - Plantlighting Hydroponics
and get it brand new, and i can upgrade the bulb to 55,000 lumen's
and i can get

  • Econogro glass lens for UL listing
  • Econogro Air Cool Fitting
added to it for a little extra, after adding it all and shipping its about 230$

I dont exactly know what that glass lens and Air cool fitting is, and if it is worth getting?
should i just get the cheap ebay deal that is used with light wear but comes with 2 bulbs?
or go brand new and get the 1 i gave link to?

also with a 400w hps, how far away should it be from plants, because i know with CFL's its about 3inches above.

I see now, I was just looking at the picture. I think you def want air cooled, but I don't know anything about that specific light.

More is always better with lights. Depends how much money is an issue. For your first grow I might suggest going with the cheaper one and after your first grow you could upgrade and keep the first bulb as a spare - you should always have a spare, bulbs go bad at the worst time. But if money isn't an issue, sure, upgrade. It isn't BS, the more expensive bulbs really do work better.

euro is just the style of the hood.....it is wired for u.s.

yes..you will want to vent air through the light...its not hard at all....a fan at one end pushing air over the bulb and ducting from the other end ran to dump the hot air outside of the grow area....or into your exauhst setup if you are getting that technical....

you will always have to set up the cooling, all it means is that you attach a 6" duct fan to a flange that connects to the lamp. If the lamp has a glass lens then the air will move through the reflector and out of the duct fan, which you then duct out of your space, this way the heat never enters your space and you can keep your lights much loser to your plants without burning. It is always a good Idea to go with air cooled if you can afford it.

any regular fan can be put in it? or is it more complicated then that.
i messaged the seller also asking for dimensions to make sure it will fit in 2x3 :)
if it does ill most likely order it.
just worried about how i am going to set it up like that fan thing :)
also is my bedroom going to reallly smell like the plant a lot? lol, since its a lot stronger light?
still might only do 3plants

yea i can afford that particular setup, but how much extra is the fan and ducting? to set it up, i dont really have aplace to duct the hot air out to either.. :( just out the closet into my bedroom? lol

...pushing into your bedroom is fine...the plants will smell no matter what type of lighting you use...... i would use a cpu fan to blow over the light and keep the ballast outside of the grow area...

yea i would keep the ballast out side my closet
like foot of my closet
but just hook up a cpu and the 12v battery inside the ducting?
also if i have an air conditioner in my bedroom, that would be cooling down the room also

yes the a/c will help loads....you can wire the cpu fan with a cellphone charger..or buy an a/c d/c adapter from radio shack...and attach the fan to one of the ports on the hood

you can get a 6" duct fan at any hardware store (home depot) for about $25 the ducting is only a few bucks, and you will eventually need something for the odor, there are a lot of diy carbon filter directions around this site just do some searching; for a grow that size these filters should do. connecting the ducting and fan is very simple so I wouldn't worry about that.
