400W vs. 1000W HPS lighting

hello

i am planning on growing in one of my apartments closets

i am going to use a drip hydroponic system

the closets dimensions are 2' x 4' x' 5'

now, i wanted to get a 400W HPS ballast and bulb... but i found a great deal with a 1000W ballast that works and comes with an HPS and MH bulbs...

so i was wondering if it would be okay to run that 1000W light system for this small closet that will have a maximum of 10 trees...

thanks alot for any help

Hi LAK.. like the gents are saying...

If you can pull the heat away then YES get a 1000 watt bulb..

It is no use to get a 1000 watt bulb if you will have to keep it 3 feet away because it is so darn hot.. then you should just go with the 400.. BUT if you can pull the heat from your light/hood out of the room.. and get the bulb 10-20 inches from your plants.. then you will be one HAPPY camper.. your BUDS/colas will be the size of forearms..

I would stay away from the 1000 w system! To much lighting for such a little area. Go with 400 w. You will most likely need at least 765 cfm or better exhaust for such a small area. I tried to grow a plant in an area about that size (my shower). 1000w was to much light and killed the plant due to over lighting. But the 400w was perfect, but still dealt with heat issues. Now I have dedicated half my basement to grow my stuff! Don't know why I didn't do that in the first place (to big a joint ~ lol). Can't you use a bedroom? Go to Hydroponics | Hydroponic Supplies for all your exhaust needs!

over lighting doesnt exist in the plant world like Omega said.and 765cfm for 40 cu ft of space seems a little much

Hi Omega..

It is nearly impossible to over light.. Although at very very high altitudes or with massive lighting at 6-10 inches this can be a problem..

I have only witnessed it once.. The plants actually turn white (not yellow or necrotic). There were 4 - 600 watt HPS bulbs, 6inches away from 100 plants growing in a 4 x 6 area.... It was just a bit to much light.. once the lights were raised to 10-14 inches.. the plants resumed vigorous growth.. and the parts of the plant that turned white.. turned green again!!! NO DAMAGE :)

The signifigant increase in lumens achieved by using a 1000 vs 400 watt bulb can easily double ONE's yield..

I am referring to, to much light! Over exposure! When you take plant, lets say from a florescent light and place it in a room with a 1000w light (over exposure). Go ahead try it if you don't believe me. You have to slowly work that plant up to the higher lighting. Plants are affected by this. Do any of you really know about photosynthesis, color spectrums and so on.............. Well do ya punks! lol

ohhh ok i see what Vote is saying now. and ye, many of know about spectrum and lumens. and as for photosynthesis, ive got it down from
6H20 + 6CO2 into C6H12O6+6O2. im pretty thats how the conversion goes, havent have chem in a while

ive got a 400w system from hightechgardensupply, on ebay that comes with a 400w mH bulb, 400w HPS bulb, ballast and timer. for under 300.00$. my grow room is 30x30x48. i use 2 500cfm inline duct fans from home depot, for about 30.00 each. the plants actually got a little on the tall side so i had to angle the lamp and reflector to the side of the 2 plants. but with the 400w bulb and 2 fans itll stay under 80* f when the lights are on and about 70*f when the light is off. working quite well, i suggest gettin a good digital timer like the one i got a sears for 25$ and a temp/humidity digital guage for 20$ from home depot, i used flat white bathroom paint to paint the walls(bathroom paint is mold and moisture resistant). and things are goin good here bout a month away from hopefully a good harvest. good luck...fire it up!!!!:joint:

Mr. Vote,

SO you are talking about transition from one enviroment to another.. yes.. that can disturb a plant.. especially dramtic temperature changes and lighting(lumens) change.. But.. it is impossible to OVER LIGHT a plant with 1000watts.. but it is possible to shock and kill a plant with dramatic changes...

Yeah shocking it with light will do it. I always gradually increase the light. I once had the same problem GK was talking about. I had my lights about 2-3 inches away and a few of my plants turned white. It was pretty weird to look at. I raised the light back up and things turned back to normal.

Back on topic... I would try to get a cool tube for your space. They are about $150 but well worth it. I can place my hand on the glass and its just a little warm. With that and and intake/exhaust duct you should be fine with the 1000w. Like knowm said it will produce bigger buds.

Wow i thought that was impossible honestly that´s why i thought the other dude meant over heating and not over lighting...anyway can u tell me why does that happen GK???Does it have to do with the plants ability to perform photosynthesis???What causes the plant to react that way in presence of a close amount of light (even if heat is not a prob)???......Peace and Pot

Bingo! Now we are on the right track! Sorry but sometimes I say things that make sense to me and forget about the rest of the world! Thank you for clearing that up!

As for exhausting the heat I do over kill on that one, but makes me feel more comfortable knowing my light isn't getting to hot! I think it also helps out with the life of the bulb.
