Police responding to a break-in alarm at a medical marijuana growing facility early Thursday arrested a man leaving the building with $40,000 of the substance in a duffle bag.
Pittsfield Township police said the alarm call came in at about 2:35 a.m. Thursday, and multiple officers responded to the building in the 4800 block of Carpenter Road, between Michigan Avenue and I-94.
"When officers reached the building, they could hear the audible alarm coming from the rear of the building," said Deputy Chief Gordy Schick. "They surrounded the building and encountered (the suspect)."
The man, a 33-year-old Livonia resident, was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail. He's expected to be arraigned by Friday, police said, with likely charges including burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession with intent to deliver marijuana.
No additional information on the suspect was immediately available, Schick said, including whether he has a prior arrest record.
The owner of the facility was called to the building to determine whether anything else had been taken, Schick said.
Police also verified that the facility was in compliance with its licensing under the state's medical marijuana laws.
"It's a legitimate grow operation," Schick said, adding that it's operated without incident in the township for about a year.
