420 nm LED's for flower?

So after looking around online a bit, and running into a couple dead ends, I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on use of 420nm blue star LEDs during flower.

Amongst my finding, I found that most people say using a bit of deeper blue during flower will not only increase resin and trichome production (due to the UV use, not sure if its uva or b), but also help with keeping the buds a bit stacked more. Or "tighter" if you will. Now with the blue, obviously more foliage is going to want to grow, so I figure with my deep red stars I should be able to get a decent balance between the uv and deep red.

Main light this will be surrounding to test it if I do indeed dive into it, will be a 200w cxb 3590 along with some flower initiators.

Wondering if anyones used this specific spectrum of 420nm, any input or arguments against it, and even where to buy some would be awesome. Thanks again

I have some on order to add to my cob setup. The 410s and 420s. 660nm will also be supplemented along with some IR to help put the girls to sleep. I will be doing a somewhat side by side between that setup and plain cxb3070s 3000k.

I haven't even finished my first grow yet but have already built another cab to play with spectrums lol. Did plenty of research on supplementation. Some don't see the point of losing efficiency and spending more money on it, but I like to experiment.

Wish I could say yeah braddah use this ratio and buy these diodes because I have experience with em and I can vouch for their effectiveness....but I can't. Yet. But there's a link for that nm you're looking for :)

Hell yeah, thank you very much for the link. And nice set up, I run 3500k right now, but I'm also learning off a friend that has been running cobs for a few years now.

Main goal is of course to have a nice full spectrum, so I figured a ratio of about 1 420nm to 3 deep reds should do the trick. I wish I new the nm of my deeps and initiators off hand, but I literally just soldered those together last night ha, time to hang em up and go. With those however, my buddy does have experience, and two thumbs up.

Thanks again for the input and the link!

Probably a stupid question but would the diodes in the link below be basically a 1w since they are 925mw?

  • Typical forward voltage 3.5V@ 700mA (3.0V min, 4.0V max)
Volts x Amps = Watts
3.5 volts times .700 Amps equals 2.45 watts
If you were to run them at 350ma, it would be 1.225 watts.
So it depends on the driver.

Should be in action within a week or so! Vero 10's 3/4k all good to go. Just waiting for their colored friends to join the party

What exactly does your experienced friend run as far as cob/supplementation combos?
I'm always gathering info on it myself.
Deep reds are 660nm, far red/initiators are 730nm. Pretty sure that's what you got if your bud recommended it. There is plenty info on those, I'm stoked to see what happens for us both! Nothing but good stuff I've been reading

Perfect, all my deeps are 3watts to my recollection.

I like the bar! I need to get better heatsinks, just running 3 in computer sinks with fans on them. Gets the job done, but with everything else coming in down, deeps-initiators-uv, I'd like to be able to clean it up a bit.

Ultimate goal is to have 300watts from the cobs per 3 sq ft area, along with the necessary reds/blues along side. Overall I just need to cover about 3x8 table I built. But as always $$$ is slowing me down

nice light @Waiks. keep an eye on that tape...haven't lost a cob with holders yet...just sayin'

I only used a little 420nm. Not really enough to say I noticed anything, but I wouldn't hesitate to either. The sun has lots and I'd rather emulate that than anything else. The 405nm tends to be quite dim and low relative outputs so I'd possibly avoid those until the output comes up. Maybe there are better ones since I last looked..

Yeah....drill and taps and I don't have a really good relationship right now. We're conscious of it and working on it though...
Haha it's actually one of those things I make sure to frequently check on. I'll clean up my act someday.

What diodes did you use, and at what ratio?
Is there any other reason not to use the lower nm, other than low output? I already have 410 shipping in.

@NWbordergrower91 Heatsinkusa baby! Actually decent priced considering the importance in the build. My other light, 4 x [email protected], uses cpu coolers. It was cheaper, but in the future I think I'll go passive.
I once had a dream of buying 8- 4'×8' plywoods and setting up a 4x8x8 box in the living room. Run 7 rows of 3 cxb3590s across with clusters of 660nm and 420nm @3:1 in between the cobs, with 4 730nm emitters for sleepytime...soon enough...soon enough... haha if only money was..easier

@Waiks

I love that you wanted to build a plywood 4x8x8, mine is 4x8x7 lol Take it from me though, bitch needs to be square. My table is just under 30'' wide, and 5ft, soon to be extended, but even on casters its a squeeze even with smaller plants. I've done 2 rounds through it so far, and my biggest regret was 1 more foot for width.

And as for heatsink usa, all over it. I have a spread sheet I found on a thread by Supra awhile back, so its easy enough to find out how much bar I need to go passive. For another 200w cxb set up exactly like I have now I would probably do a 4'' at least 20'' long, no pun intended ha. But I'm a young daddy in school working part time, so $$ is tight as far as my growing fund but thats all in due time right?! Glad to see I'm on the right track somewhat here

I used 2 405nm in the first grow, first page of my thread. Used the 420nm somewhere else along the line. Usually comes down to running out of room on the sink. The leds were exotic brand through ledgroupbuy.com. Steves' led had a few violet ones too.
Thinking of doing a small mixed mono light for fun . I could put together some pretty interesting combos with my led collection.

bjb holders are nice to isolate the contacts on stars. Otherwise you end up with open solder joints. You don't want to get shocked by a high voltage driver touching solder pads...it's a pretty good shock. Reefledsupply had those last I checked. Buy a couple extra if you decide to use them. the contacts can get messed up and make your connections not connect..

good luck..it's more work. I wouldn't want to do a big area like that but small areas are fun..
