Wow has this world changed. In the mid 90's I started growing, or trying to grow and by '01 I had retired for no other reason than I lost interest. It became less work to just buy what I wanted although it felt cheap. Now I'm looking around and pricing things out to see what is out there.
The bottom line is that in todays age of Medical Marijuana and a wider acceptance of growing and marijuana in general things have become pretty reasonable. With a little research I put a budget together for a small setup and was amazed. For less than 1k you can now setup a solid room with great lights and CO2 to yield several pounds a year. Below is a quick list of things I've found that are better now than "back in the day".
1-Cheaper, everything seems to be cheaper. Lights are less than half what they used to be and the technology is better.
2-Environmental controls are easier to achieve with all of the modern equipment that is available. Cool tubes and other reflector housings that allow venting the heat from the growing space is awesome.
3-C02 is affordable. A good solenoid type regulator is only 130$ add two 20# tanks at 85$ each and you are cruising. This was unheard of ten or twelve years ago.
4-Nutrient Selection. There are more nutrients on the market than ever before. All the old ones are still around but there are a million more than there used to be, not saying they are all good but there is a selection.
5-Vendors and Retailers are easy to find. With more states passing Medical laws there are grow shops everywhere. Twelve years ago there was one in my city and maybe 20 in the state. There are at least 15 in my area and too many to count in the state.
6-There is more information available than ever before, a double edged sword as a lot of it is crap but still there is more good information readily available through online forums etc.
One thing that I've noticed that hasn't changed is the amount of people still trying to cut corners and yield 3gms per watt on Fluorecents from bag seed. I guess some things never change.
