50w per Sq/ft.? Is this right?

I've herd this number as the minimum, however I've also herd that 5000 lumens per sq ft indoors is ideal. Which one is it? Because if you do the math than a 600 watt, 90000 lumen is only 37w per sq/ft in a 4'by4' area, however it's also 7500 lumens per sq/ft, maybe around 5000 considering distance to the plants (using a cooltube too:mrgreen:.)

Which "rule of thumb" should I follow.

And can a 90k 600w generously light a 4' by 4' area?

i dont know about your other question, but let me tell you, a 600w light can shine the shit out of any 4 by 4 area. thats a lot of light

a 3x3 area is optimal for a 600w hps which comes out to 66.66watts per square ft. Ive heard that the minimum watt per square ft is more like 42. :peace::blsmoke:

I read somewhere that you should be going by lumens per sq ft.
Light – lumens per square feet (concept 420)
A great goal is to get around 2,000 lumens per square foot. During the vegetative stage, plants stretch out when they receive low levels of light. The higher the level of light, the tighter the buds will be. Thats what I read. Hope it helps.

Hmm, I've also seen many grow journels of people using 600's for 4by4 areas and greater. I think I'll do a 600 over each 4by4 and see how it works out.

Maybe I could I could line between the trays with two or three 50 or 60 watt CFL's.

if you saw my grow area, you would trip, i got alot of space to work with so thats my cat in the hat. I use 600 watts hortilux mh that have 50000 lumens each, i have 4 lights which in sense is 200,000 lumens in 1600 sq ft. I think i am fine, dont know about you though.

Jesus, how big is your grow room? 40x40?

Ive got a 600w lighting a 4x4 garden and the outer plants are stretching a little but not too much.

That is why you normally see 3x3 flood tables with 600watters and 4x4 flood tables with 1000watters.

One 1000 watter could also nicely light two 3' trays at 55w per sqft, which seems to be most efficient for the SoG I would like to put together.

Yeah a 1000w can light a 3x6 table pretty nicely. Im braindead today....I had a long boring brain numbing day at work.

I'm using a 1000w for a 5x3 area and it seems to be doing allright.I also keep it no farther than 3 ft form seedlings up to a foot for bigger plants. I just tie the bigger ones down.
