I'm not saying it's more financially viable, on the contrary it would cost a bit more. There's just no noise, no byproducts to vent, and you have to worry less about maintenance. If you're a treehugger, it's a plus.
In the long run solar would be cheaper electricity will never get any cheaper especially with all the talk about a carbon tax. But of course not many can afford solar power.
Fuel cells are the answer. Natural gas to electricity now, with cogenerated heat for whatever you like heat for around the house. MUCH more efficient than power utility. Solar cells can assist, especially in summer with high demand.
