56 year old first time grower Light question

Hello all I am a real newbie when it comes to growing and am learning alot from this site.. I have 3 new babies that I just transplanted today and I have a 104 watt flourescent bulb that is the same as 400 watts i bought it at an indoor sun shop along with other sttuf. My question is..How far should the light be from the new starts that I grew from seeds?

Thanks in advance for any help and not blasting an old smoker but not grower

as close as you could get it without burning the plant ... Put your hand over the plant and lower the light till it burns ya ,, then back it off some ,, move according to growth

you say you have a 104 watt flourescent, but also say it's the same as a 400 watt.
now do you mean it is equal to 400 watts?
or you also have a 400 watt HPS/MH with a ballast n all?

IF you only have the flourescent, you can put the light as close as 2-3 inches away.

BUT if you have the HPS/MH, then that changes everything. That will need to be say 2 feet away or so just incase. cuz you don't want to burn your little babys now;)

n for both, make sure you have a fan blowing under the path of the light. no one likes heat stress. specially lil girls.

I'm a 56 year old grower too, but I started 35 years ago, so I feel for your loss of all that free weed you could of had.
Anyways, the closer the light the better. Hold the back side of your hand underneath it and move it closer till you can feel the heat finally. Pull it back an inch and that's your safe distance. You should have a small fan blowing on the too to keep them cool and toughen up the stem.
(BTW a 100 CFL is only as strong as 400 watts incandescent light NOT HID light, big difference)
(Jeez I gotta type faster 4 guys answered ahead of me already)

Thank You and yes it has been a long time. I use it for my Multiple Sclerosis and can grow according to the law but growing is a whole new world.

yeah no problem man i was in your shoes once lol.
but yeah 2-3 inches away is perfect:)
i used CFL's for my very first grow but I use HPS for flowering now.
cuz ya i didnt find good enough results flowering with CFL's, but it is a good starter thats forsure.
but readup and if u want nice gorgeous dense nugs go with the HPS;)

Yeah, I agree with the others that light should work at 2-3 inches away with a hand test. It's good to see somebody actually older than me start growing :)

best thing for u too do is put ur hand in between the plants and the light, general rule is if its not too hot for ur hand then it is going to be fine for the plants, im kinda new too but have learnt alot over the last few months, let me know if u need more help.

hps isnt for everyone. It just opens a can of worms( heat) in stealth operations. Only good if you have a decent size grow room or great ventilation.

Im doing the same thing krop, Its my first grow aswell. It becomes a hobby/obsession real quick
