no leaks. Ive used these trashcans this way in the winter for years. as long as you either run sterile, or beneficial bacteria, there really is no need for a cleaning.(with the exception of first clean out from new hydroton) I grow large plants to keep numbers down. so even 4 months in water, ive never had an issue. :leaf:

*there is a plug up top there. that was a mistake on placement on my part. I went as low as possible for a full drain.

Heisenberg tea is where I started. Never mix the two as far as h2o2 and bennies. A kill off and repopulation Of the bennies causes wild ph swings. I simplified it down to just great white, 1/4 dose of what's recommended every resi change, to every other once healthy roots are established. 4 oz of gw last me year + 0 problems.

I use the Heisenberg tea alone no nutes for 3days then change to my gh program... I always thought my salt nutes will kill any beni's.. so it'll either be h202 and gh nutes or the Heisenberg with pureblend pro but I wanted to go organic any how .. thks @dangledo

from what I understand, its high concentrations of salt build up that kills off the bacteria. I use drip dwc at no more than 900 ppm and rinse(flush) my hydroton at 200 ppm once a month to prevent accumulation of salts(drip ring helps keep hydroton clear of build up, as I use 10 inch net cups) we are using microbes to prevent/cure pythium, not to break down organic compounds. keep anything organic out of your dwc, and all should be well.

as far as valves go, those are the only ones ive used. cheap and easy installation. just make sure you use the right size hole for the grommet for a snug fit.

3/4 inch side of a flood and drain kit attached to the bottom of your Rez. Elevate Rez and add a 3/4 on/off valve. You then just simply turn a knob and Rez drains completely. Add a float valve to the top for auto refill. Small opening that you can cover to add nutrients and check ph/ppm.
