I ran a 400w in a 3 x 3 x 6 room for a couple years. Upgrading to an air cooled hood is a must for a room that size. That being said, I was able to control temps while pulling air through a carbon filter from inside the room. I recently upgraded to the 600 and it opened a whole new challenge in heat control. I've figured it all out now, but I'd suggest if starting out to go 400 as it's easier to handle and you'll get very good results.
* if buying an air cooled hood, I would seriously consider getting a hinged hood with a gasket to seal the hood. Mine is not and it's a PITA to change bulbs as I have to tape the gaps in the glass with foil tape otherwise some of the smell bypasses my carbon filter resulting in a very nervous visit from the neighbor...
