Remember he's in Coco, I would be careful giving the plant 7.0 at this point but the concept is right on. Feed it with your normal adjustment, then test the runoff and check the results. This is the first thing I usually do when my plant is showing signs of sickness. Test runoffs for PH and for EC to make sure everything is in order, then start the guessing game.
Didn't know about the coco. Make sure your using a coco formulated nute in that case, other than that can't speak much to experience with that medium. Use Ph 6.0 water and use same process, but I'm guessing your ph is low locking out that stuff. Had that issue myself in the past.

I agree, test EC if you have the opportunity also.

well just checked the ph of runoff
looks like this may be the problem
but i just fed earlier with only a half gal and she didnt even take all of it
so instead of letting her sit there full of nutes she cant take in
would i want to add like another half gal of ph 7.0 or so water??
if i wait it will get much worse it already has.
what to do

It looks like you have some type of lock out. My guess is your medium is too acidic? I would just flush for this next week. Do you have any clearex or final phase? I suggest doing a flush of that and nothing but fresh water into it. It looks like it's getting pretty serious. No use in giving her food if she can't eat it. Wasting money at that point, imo.

You're right, you don't want to wait, you want to fix it and move forward. What would you say the PH result is? I can't say but its low eh. If you want to flush it right and be done with it, flush it with 6.0 (assuming this is your desired PH?) with about 3 x the water of your grow container and then give it 1/2-3/4 str feeding. Put in your desired PH, get out desired PH, introduce nutrients of your desired PH. I wouldn't recommend putting 7.0 into a medium that is reading 5.0 hoping it would average to 6.0. Pump the 6.0 through her until you know its 6.0. This is the advice that was given to me by members here when I encountered the same issues except with soil, the turnaround was faster than I expected. This happens to everyone at least once too, so don't beat yourself up over it, its a learning experience.

If I were working with coco I would make sure I got plenty of runoff every single time I watered, and be careful to not water too frequently. This helps prevent nutrient buildups in the soil and will help to maintain desired PH levels.

so i just ph'd 7 gallons of water, flushed, and watered with a gal of like 1/4 strength nutes
tested ph and it was coming out bottom of pot at 5.0 still!!!!
bout to flush with another 5 gals of ph water
this is annoying

I suggest getting a flushing agent at this point man. Clearex, final phase, ect. Not too expensive and it has good chances to save your harvest.

Flushing is very annoying, I hear you PT. You'll want to go with 3x the size of your grow container so if you're in a 7 gallon you'll want 21 gallons of flush/runoff. Once you get the desired PH, then you can give some food.

yea i flushed with like 15 gals of ph water
btw im in a 3 gal pot
the runoff seemed to level out a little toward the end
gave it like 1/3 feeding at the end
we'll see what happens

Any time something is up with my plants i flush flush flush with at least x3 water. She will appreciate it. You've done the right thing, flush then feed a mild dose of nutes.

Will keep a close eye on ur journal over the next week or so, feels like i've missed a chunk of this grow somehow....

GOOD LUCK! i know how wounding problems can be!

Coco, being a neutral substrate, should bounce back nicely I'm thinking. I've never grown in exclusively coco, only used it in my soil mixes but I think you will bounce back.

yea the only reason i didnt pre treat it was bc the guy at the hydro store told me the makers do a real good job of keeping it neutral during processing so it can be used straight outta teh bag.
why did i get this build up of acid?
from feeding too much? or is it just the coco?

just trying to learn from all my mistakes the first time around so that these chiesels are perfect
just topped them the other day
clones start (1).jpgclones start (2).jpg
look how big the one grew already
i just started mild like 1/4 nutes on these two chiesel

and heres some pics just to give u somethin to look at
i turned my plant around.
for some reason teh colas against teh back wall got alot bigger and grew quicker during veg
bud 6 week (1).jpgbud 6 week (2).jpg
def. seems to have stopped or slowed at least from what i can tell
hopefully she can make it until next feeding
that coco takes a few days to dry out when it has been drenched

My best guess is evaporation/plant consumption. You ph your water with acid each time, so the input is correct but when it evaporates or water is taken up by the plant the acid can remain. (it can actually also be eaten by the plant as a food but that's another topic) Just make it part of your regular practice to measure runoff at minimum twice a week and you will avoid issues into the future I think.

Beware taking advice from the guy at the hydro store. In my experience they can either be brilliant or they can be complete idiots. They don't pay a whole lot there, you know. lol

so i flushed two days ago with like 6 gal of water.
last two were ph adjusted and last 1 was like 1/2 - 1/4 strength nutes
woke up just now to my plant looking seriously sad as fuck
it was 95F in there and dry so im assuming the hps is much hotter than the mh???
shes not looking very perky and in the very middle there is the first discoloration i've seen

its just brown on a few tops out of NOWHERE
how did this happen so fast it was fine last night

i need to feed here in a few and idk what to give her
i have some MagiCal laying around, which is magnesium calcium, is this calcium def???
is it light burn?? its just right in the middle of the canopy

i woke up all tired like wtf is happening?!?!
Hell yeah the HPS burnt your plant...I can't get mine cooled down either, so I am going to use my MH through this whole grow, or maybe the HPS a few hours, probably not at all...

I would be inclined to guess that salt buildup pushed his PH too acidic. I totally agree, keeping up on runoffs is a great idea but without EC readings it would be difficult to tell what is forcing the PH too acidic. The best way IMO to ensure you're not getting a salt buildup and that your plant gets plenty of nutrients at the correct PH is to water with plenty of runoff. Something I would definitely do with coco if I were using it. When I used synthetic nutes a friend of mine suggested to water until 30% of the water I've given the plant has run off. This simulates a pseudo flush every time you feed to ensure you're applying appropriate PH and plenty of food while forcing residual food from the substrate to maintain PPM's in your desired range. I did this with synthetics in soil and had awesome results by feeding every time I watered the plants. I collected the runoff, metered it for PH and PPM compared to the solution going in. I aimed to keep it within 20-25% and under 800-900 ppm for soil, some strains like it lower or higher. Never used coco so I don't know what you aim for, probably a bit higher. I got a little crazy with it recording a bunch of data but I learned alot from it. A nice addition to any garden for 20-30 bucks is an EC meter. It can help figure out what's going on in the substrate when you encounter problems.

Do you coco growers mix your coco with chunky perlite or anything to reduce density? Just curious b/c that is the thing that scares me about coco, its so damn absorbent.

yea shwag dude coco is really absorbent but its like really airy and light. It dries out way faster than soil and really does act just like hydro but with handwatering you can control what goes in every other day when it dries out. Thanks for that awesome info tho foreal thats definitely why my ph got too acidic bc I wasnt always watering til i got runoff. AND i was feeding calmag there for a littel before it happened + no runoff=salt buildup forsure

So i get it now, the runoff helps carry out the nutes that the plant didnt use.
I always wondered why runoff was necessary

anyways there back on track now suckin up nutes and getting fat
finally
only like 1 week left
and then a week of flush

No prob PT, I'm stoked to hear they're back to business! I hope its smooth sailing form here out.
