600w hps question

Ok so for my next grow im gonna use and air cooled HPS coz it makes sense basically... Ive bn told that the lamp covers an area of 120cm by 120cm and ive seen a grow tent with those dimensions that im considering buying...

My question is... if i can fit say 16 plants in there, do you think i could reasonalbly expect an oz per plant off them if i take care of temp humidity and dose with co2 - is it a reasonable guess or should i go for less plants. Im just wondering if it will make any difference to having say 12?

thanks in advance

well how will you be growing (hydro or soil). What strain will you be using? Are you using cuttings or seeds? What nutrients are you going to use and how long do u plan on vegging/flowering? If your ultimate goal is to get a pound you dont need to grow 16 plants...ask around to some of the more experienced growers and see what they are doing...some are yielding 2-4 oz per plant.

i have 2 large plants under 1 600..its always hard to determine wuts ideal for how many plants under each light.. i think a 600 will cover a 3x3 area very well..i couldnt imagine growing 16 under it..but u may use very small containers..or go hydro with small netpots..i prefer large pots w/ soil for now..and in my case i can only cram a few giants under ea lamp..

Ultimately (like all of us) i just want the best possible yield.

I will be growing using pots 25cm by 25cm and ill be using soil as its only my 2nd grow - i will be giving at least 2 months vegging and using biobizz nutrients the only reason i say 16 is thats the max (with a bit of a gap) that i could get in there and im just wondering if i will get better results with more plants as opposed to maybe a few less

16 single cola SOG style plants would work in a hydro medium, but if your using soil I'd probably max out at 9 plants and try topping them early to increase yield. If you let your plants get 2-3 ft, you can expect an ounce per plant maybe slightly less or more. Any taller and you won't have enough light penetration with the single 600w.

i think an ounce per plant is the least you could get:hump:

With 2 months of veg you would want to go with less numbers coz vegging 2-6 plants for 2 months will give you the same end result.

1lbs per 600 watt is my rule of thumb.

Ok... so 9 max under a single 600w hps???

Ive read a little on topping and im gonna try it - does it just make the plant bushier and grow outwards more?

As for getting them to 2-3ft how do i do that - i will be definitely giving them the 2 months veg as the last ones i done at 1 month veg yielded hardly anything...

I got 3.5 ounces off two plants under a 400w in soil. Could have gotten more per plant if I had trained them better, but they yielded enough medicine to last me a while. I think that 4 could have worked out under the 400w, and I figure a 600w produces almost twice the lumens, so 6-8 is a reasonable number of plants under that lamp. If you do your part, you should get about 1.5 to 2 oz per plant.

30 days of veg will get you to a 2-3 foot plant with most strains I have seen. I vegged my Afghans till they were 12" tall and that took right at 30 days. By the time they were down flowering, they were both 3 foot tall.

9 would be a good capacity for a soil op with decent sized pots (2+ gal). For hydro ops you could have more potential for a single cola sog op and fit probably 12-14 under one without too much hassle.

After you top a vegging seelding, you'll get 2+ tops that will form top colas. If you keep pruning tops of the side branches, they will continue to branch out more. When topping a clone, you almost always end up with a lot of tops instead of just two because the branches are usually alternating unlike a young seedling.

As for getting them to 2-3ft how do i do that - i will be definitely giving them the 2 months veg as the last ones i done at 1 month veg yielded hardly anything...
2-3ft will be your minimum height after a 2 month veg. It wouldn't be too unlikely that some of the plants could end up 4+ ft if you veg that long. Goodluck, once you get your hands on it once or twice you'll grab it by the horns. :peace:

I'm using a 600 HPS I have 8 topped and pruned plants...I will add another light before I would add more lights.

8 would be a good capacity. Are they in two rows of 4? For 9 plants I would do 3 rows of 3 and still have a decent penetration. There's always room for supplemental lighting.

There not really arranged geometrically. I tried to get the short ones directly under the light...but since I have a rotational crop...4 are on day 15 and 4 are on day 45.

Yea you have a nice looking setup slippery. I will be doing a rotating crop also with mine. I work with a 4x4 flower space, and 3 plants x 3 plants seems like it should work. I've only started one round to get my clones, now I'll be filing up the flowering room. It looks like you topped and got a lot of branching. You should pull some good yields. + rep on the setup

Thanks...I topped and super cropped one, super cropped one, and let on go with minimal pruning...I wanted to test for yield and quality. I'm in favor of super cropping....It makes the stems fatter and controls canopy height.

I looked at your tent....nice and clean I like it...I saw you had to take a few plants early...was this on purpose or did you outgrow your space?

Took a few early b/c they hermied. Probably due to stress or just the fact they were feminized seeds. I had planted them when it was freezing cold, then it warmed up and they got the HPS so it could have been stress. Either way, the ones I left to keep going are nice, and I have a few branchy clone mothers to start the rotating.

They look good...I have heard feminized seeds are more likely to go hermi...I thought you out grew the area

Nah, I had 6 females in the 4x4, and I still had plenty of room for 3 more. If i topped and super cropped like you did, the 6 would have outgrew the area though.

Im using a 600w hps reflector bulb and i know that i will yield 2 to 2.5 ounces off each plant. Or at least i always have in the past. I only have 3 under it now but 9 would sure be all that you could get under mine. Im going to try a 12 plant stadium grow next but im going to add a light!!

two topped and one not pic are from about 30 days in 12/12. These are bagseeds that take about 12 weeks flower. They vegged for about 35 days
