1000 watts in a 4 X 6 is about perfect if you can handle the heat.

A particular and specific number of "watts per plant" is just hypothetical bullshit, spewed by children who have never grown a plant.

Is this a 12/12 plant from seed, or a mother plant 3' diameter grown 3 months.

Big difference.

Be really careful of the bullshit you read online.

We will be growing 8 x 12/12 afghani auto fems from seed.

Thinking the 1000w vertical will be perfect, as we can cool naturally by opening the door each day (covering the door space with mesh). And it doesnt get particularly warm here at the best of times, and has been a pretty lousy summer.

Another question on a vertical setup, is it just as effective to run the bulb upright from the ground, say attached to a stand or pole in the middle of the room, or is hanging the default option for a reason?

I don't wanna sound awkward but I would go 3x 400w Mh/HPS or just maybe 2x 400w, that way you have greater control, over the lights, but as you now have mentioned the stain ..this reopens the T5 or T8 rack, 4 feet long with 6-8 tubes, autos are very quick growing 2-3 months max, you just wanna germ them then drop them under the lights and .................Whammm 6-8 weeks later done ...great for a sequential grow type set up

Given the short height yet good floor space I would go with 2 400's. Its too short really for any HID light to provide adequate coverage throughout the whole space where two 400's would do a nice job. Vertical is a good option but you need access to the plants and I think 4' is gonna kinda suck to work around no matter what.

you can never grow wrong with too much light but like many have said heat and cost control are an issue. hang lights vertical with 2 6" intakes with one of the intakes with an inline duct fan directly under the light. use a inline exhaust fan that can turn over the room quickly. your area is about 100 cubic feet. grow the plants v-scrog. I have the same sq.ft but my ht. is 6' i have a 500cfm inline exhaust fan and it can implode the tent without my 2 6" intakes and a ventilation light proof door. good
