I do not agree that hydro needs same volume of meduim as soil....... its a rull a thumb like you said 1 gallon per foot of grwoth but not so much in a hydro set-up, you can have a smaller meduim depending on what kinda Active hydro system you use.....The answer is yes, but I wouldn't recommend it. A general rule of thumb is 1 foot per gallon of medium, but this generally applies to hydroponics as well given the size of your rez. The reason being, if you're in doors with a 400 or 600 watt light and you've got a 6 foot tall plant, how much light is getting through the canopy? It's almost a waste to spend so much time vegging your plant to 6 feet indoors then not having enough light during flower.
Hope this helps and good luck

Agreed. Seems like the general consensus is to not go with the 6 ft plant OPits a rull a thumb like you said 1 gallon per foot of grwoth but not so much in a hydro set-up, you can have a smaller meduim depending on what kinda Active hydro system you use.....
I would agree that growing a six foot tall plant and only having 3 feet of penatration is just a waste of nutes and time and PG&e so on that note id say you spot on
