7 out of 8 male what went wrong?

:joint::confused: Hi ya'll. As you may know a friend is growing his first ever hydroponic grow. He and I have both grown in soil, indoors and out with great success, but this baffles us both.
He planted his usual hybrid seed that usually produces 80% female plants in soil.
These plants were bushy and thick in the growth stage of 2 weeks. I never had seen such a bushy indoor plant. Then, all the bush plants went into flower to check sex and each and everyone, one at a time, slowly popped out balls and went male. There is one plant left that I would have guessed would have to be a male as it is just a straight up top without much bush to it. I think it is going male as well but it has not shown as yet so it is slow to flower to say the least.
These plants were 2 weeks into veg, had 7 nodes before going to 12/12 under a 400 hps from a 400 mh. Using GH Flora using their formula for grow and Lucas formula for flower.
The seeds were stated in Rapid Rooter plugs in RO water with no nutrients until they popped roots, then 25% solution for the first 3 days, then 50% for 3 days, then 100% once the plants started to take off.
Water temps running around 65f night and 70f day. Using a waterfarm with controller system for this run but building an aeroponics "STINK" system for future grows once he gets things figured out with this waterfarm. He hates to fail so he has to get a grow with the waterfarm. He knows it has to be something he did to cause this.
I think he is going to grow starting in soil and change over to hydroponics once they are sexed so he can make clones, but still wants to know what he did wrong in the first grow from seed.

well most likely they were stressed in some way. His best bet is to keep a mother plant or 2 and take clones. Seeds are alot of trouble, something i now realized looking back on my first grows. If its not legal in your state then you have to start from seed to get a new strain unless you have someone who wants to give you some cuttings. My best advice you the 2 of you is to find a strain you like and roll with it for a while and just take cuttings and stay away from seeds, they cost too much and arent reliable.

He has started 30 seeds so far this time. It is not like he has to purchase seeds as he grows his own as we both have done for many years.

Hopefully, he will get some females this time around as he has over 30 plants started this time half of which are in water (rapid rooter plugs) and the rest in dirt. I am taking pics of this grow so once it has been harvested, the photo's will be published on roll it up. (Too paranoid to publish as they grow) I will even take some pics of these fantastic looking male plants. They will be dads as I like the bushy genes. One of the males is just a stock like one would expect, 6 are bushes, and the last is looking like a male today as well. That makes 8 out of 8 male plants. The pollen will be collected for later to pollinate a female for seed. Maybe even feminize them this time around by growing one of them extra long waiting for hermi flowers to propigate a plant or two with.

I want him to try the Stinkgarden. It looks to me like it would be a lot more cost effective then the waterfarm 8 unit controler with 20 - 30 gallons of nutrient mix but I think they will make great stand alone units for an Hydro-organic grow. I think that this also sounds real promising way to grow. I am watching them to see how they work out with the test on RIU.

Thank you for your answers.

Yeah, the male plants are always your biggest, strongest, healthiest, and best plants. And now with 30, you will get about 15 females. If all are treated well, it's usually around 50/50. You can also get a higher percentage of females, but if you get more males or all males, it's usually because you did something to cause that. Like was already said, some stress, probably to the tap root.

This was his first real hydroponic grow. The one plant he has is awesome. I want to take a pic and ask how many plants he has growing in this SCROG and when people are guessing like 7, 8 (there are 11 cola's that are large enough to each be the top cola to there own plant. Then show that this is only 1 plant. Then show them the original top cola is still on the plant. Each cola looks to be about a half oz of dry pot to about a quarter oz. Very nice plant, but when you only have one to work with, you get that kind of result, haha. All under one 400 watt hps doing a technique I learned many years ago. Only taking about half of the tip top and cutting it. It will branch between 4 to 8 times plus let all the lower grow shoots to shoot up to the top with everyone else.

He did make some clones off of the ol' girl so there will be more plants on the next flowering of this grow.

Almost time to smoke it up...mmmm m. Now, all I have to do is convince Jon that he doesn't have to be noided out about taking a pic.
